Adobe Floor Basics - How to build a dirt cheap floor Seems crazy, right? A dirt floor, of all things! Well, time for a perception shift... Adobe floors are lusciously beautiful and quite durable. And best of all, in most regions they can be made from local clay soil. (Which makes them dirt cheap...sorry, couldn't resist.) The Concept An adobe floor, or earthen floor, relies on the sticky binding properties of clay...one of the most versatile building materials I know of. What I describe below is the method I use to install an adobe floor. The Layers A typical adobe floor includes a build-up of layers, each with a purpose. #1: The substrate You want your floor to rest on solid ground (or a stiff framed floor with little flex). #2: The capillary break Next you install several inches of gravel to provide a capillary break that prevents any potential liquid water in the ground from rising up into the floor. #3: The vapor barrier Next you lay a vapor barrier that covers the entire floor area. #5: The base layer #6: The leveling layer #7: The finish
10 Amazing Tips for Building Energy Efficient Homes| Interesting Engineering Energy efficiency isn’t just a buzz word; it should be a key consideration for building any home. It is possible to have a more comfortable and efficient living space with the touch of simple elements of design. Energy costs are rising and will increase in future decades. Well, with integrated plans, building owners can save a lot over the lifetime of finished constructions. There are many energy efficient measures on can consider during the design of a building. 0. Energy consumption is, of course, significant to the initial design for every energy efficient house. [Image Source: Pixabay] 1. The first consideration for energy efficient homes should always be the location and orientation of the building. 2. Engineering the landscape around the building can also play a major role in energy efficiency. 3. Adopting low U-value frames and Low-E (low emissivity) glazing appropriately for the climate and direction is another critical design consideration. 4. [Image Source: Pixabay] 5. 6. 7.

How to Build Your Own Starter House in Just 5 Steps — for $25,000 Picture this: you own a small piece of land. Nothing fancy — just a small plot. A group of people shows up, sets up a workshop in your shed, and within five days, using materials available at your local hardware store or made from the raw resources of your land, builds you a small starter house kitted out with state-of-the-art eco features for less than $25,000. Sound crazy? As they close out a successful Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to take the idea to the next stage of development, Marcin and Catarina give the lowdown on barn-raising, open source style. 1) Create an open source library of modules. Each essential piece of the house is designed to be built individually, then assembled like building blocks, kind of like Lego. 2) Train people to build in this way. Lots of people want to learn how to build their own house — and lots of people would prefer their house to be built for them. 3) Construction pays for itself. What might this look like? 4) Get people out of debt. Sound cozy?
Landscape Architects Network · The Voice of Landscape Architecture Broadcasting Architecture Worldwide Peoples Meeting Dome on Behance TECHNICAL: The geodesic dome, the starting point, is a frequency four, its great circles forming the lines that are cut along in the splitting of the surface. The chipped sphere surfaces are scaled from the center of the sphere and therefore remains true to the geometry. The surfaces in between becomes radiating, perpendicular to the spheres surfaces. The ambitions of the system was honored by 3D-modelling the entire skeleton. Printed nodes that are laser cut and robot welded, meet the high precision requirements of the lattice structure. The dome was set on the site with half nodes, as in all other intersections of the surface. Area: 212m2.Height: 8m.

A good old fashioned shed building thread (picture heavy) I've just taken on an allotment plot recently. Partly so that I could grow some rad veg to eat, but mainly, if I'm honest, so I could BUILD A SHED! I thought I'd share my progress with you shed-appreciating folks here. I work as an instructor/technician in a College, teaching cabinetmaking and so for one, have a great workshop to use but also, a two-week window over the Easter break with no students in (except Mon, Tues, Weds last week), with holiday booked to hastily build my shed. I had to be quick! My design is inspired by boats, by camping pods, by curvy stuff, by not wanting a flat-roofed shed, and so is based on images I have been looking at online by a bloke called Stimpson, who came up with a quick and elegant way of building shelters for boat building... The curved ribs are formed from two sections, blocks are screwed in from both sides, thereby locking the components into a curve. I had done a plan of sorts on Google Sketchup. Initial layout onto 2 8x4' panels.
