Text Encoding Initiative The Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) is a text-centric community of practice in the academic field of digital humanities, operating continuously since the 1980s. The community currently runs a mailing list, meetings and conference series, and maintains an eponymous technical standard, a journal, a wiki, a GitHub repository and a toolchain. TEI guidelines[edit] The TEI Guidelines, which collectively define an XML format, are the defining output of the community of practice. The format differs from other well-known open formats for text (such as HTML and OpenDocument) in that it's primarily semantic rather than presentational; the semantics and interpretation of every tag and attribute are specified.
18thConnect - TypeWright TypeWright1 is a tool for correcting the text-version of a document made up of page images. These text-versions are crucially necessary: they are what enables full-text searching, datamining, preserving, and curating2 texts of historical importance. Right now, the text running behind the page images of these texts has been mechanically typed,3 leaving behind errors that need to be corrected by human eyes and hands. Our contracts with Gale and Proquest allow any person or group who corrects a text to be given that text when finished correcting it to use as they wish.
Comprehensive List of Digital Resources Digital Literacies in a Networked World is a graduate seminar at Penn, in which the class explores and analyzes how literacy and learning are constantly evolving, as students become not only consumers, but also makers of digital media. During our time in this course, we engaged with, and challenged how meaning making happens in and out of the classroom, and how diverse digital tools can be useful in empowering students and teachers toward becoming informed, collaborative and active contributors to their local and global communities. As a way of participating in the Digital Literacies community, each week students were asked to contribute to the course wiki, a digital space where they contributed and described educational tools that they would recommend to students and other educators. Week after week, students not only researched new tools, they also explored, tested, and utilized the tools that were recommended by their classmates.
