Bottles Full of Light

The other day, I wrote about attempting to drill through glass and I finished up the project this weekend. I think it turned out beautifully — I love the idea of bottled light! These would be pretty by a wintery window or under an entry table. I like the way the gold paint makes the bottom of the bottles look misty and glow-y, even during the daytime. I’ve got a ton of images and DIY instructions below if you’d like to try this too. For tools and supplies, I started at my local True Value. I started with these apple juice bottles from Whole Foods. Next, I used my handy scraper tool to take off the label. Once the bottle was clean and label free, it was time to drill through the glass. [UPDATE: Hah! Next we painted. I used a disposable sponge brush and Liquid Leaf paint — but any metallic enamel paint should work. Once the paint was dry (it dries very quickly), we started stuffing the lights in. And that’s it! This is another project as a True Value Blog Squad Member.

Wood&Faulk | Documents of experiments, style and craft. Zip-up Earbuds & LauPre - StumbleUpon I love to have my music with me everywhere I go, but I hate the tangled mess my wires become when I toss them in my bag or pocket. Last night I whipped up a fun and functional solution by adding a zipper to my earbuds. This project took me around an hour to do (perfect for catching up on some t.v. from hulu.com). The supplies are few; basic sewing supplies, a pair of headphones, and a nice long zipper. I happened to have this crazy purple and gold nike zipper I found thrifting a while ago, it seemed perfect for this project. The first step is to pull the earbuds apart, to separate the wires all the way down to the plug. Next, take one side of your headphones and one side of the zipper tape and start stitching the wire into the tape. It’s as easy as that! Then unzip them to the length I want and put them on so much faster than having to untangle the mess!

newcombhome.blogspot.com/2011/05/how-to-turn-wine-bottles-into-water.html For months now I’ve been keeping those twist-off style wine bottles. The glass is pretty and they have caps. I’m sure there are tons of uses for them, right? Actually, I really think there are. But today I’ll show you how you can spruce up an old wine bottle to make a great water pitcher. The pitcher can be used during a party, at a sit-down dinner, or left in a guest room for visitors. You need: Old wine bottles Etching cream A foam brush Stencil(s) A sink This is the etching cream we used. You can use any sticker stencil (or even make your own out of masking tape), but I used my cousin’s awesome Cricut to cut the stencil out of vinyl. While the bottles are soaking, make your stencil. When your stencil is ready and your bottle is dry and label-free, place the stencil on the bottle. Make sure there aren’t any bubbles in the vinyl so the etching cream doesn’t seep under the stencil. Then, use the foam brush to apply the etching cream. Did you notice the bottle switcheroo? x

Etched Hot Cocoa Jar {Creative Carousel} It's my turn on the October Creative Carousel! This month's theme is Handmade for the Holidays. There have been some incredible ideas already shared at Every Creative Endeavor , Sew Dang Cute , and Lil' Luna. Here is my handmade Christmas gift: An etched hot cocoa jar! With all of the fixings for your friends and family to create their own hot cocoa! This would be fun to make in an assembly line and create jars for all the neighbors! Let's get started! I found this jar at Wal-Mart and quickly went to work cutting a monogram stencil out of contact paper. I followed the directions on Armour Etch to brush the cream over the stencil. Etching is SO quick and easy! Let's be honest here. I wanted to create some marshmallow sticks to use to stir the hot cocoa. I have to admit that I made plenty of extras. I wrapped everything up in cellophane tied with ribbon. --- Mini marshmallows (Can you ever have too many marshmallows with your hot cocoa?!) --- Three jumbo marshmallow stir sticks What do you think?

Mason Jar Key Hook - StumbleUpon Hey guys! Hope you all had a great Wednesday I have a fun project to share today! I started with a 1×8 board from Lowe’s that I cut to about 2′ long. I used a different paint method on this board and I love how it turned out so I am going to share it with you in my next post. So for now… Here is my board after it is painted and ready to go. I also purchased 3 hooks and a pipe clamp from Lowe’s. My next step was attaching them to my board. Then it was time to attach the clamp. I used a 3/4″ wood screw to attach it to my board. Finally, I added to picture hangers to the back of it and hung it up. I love it. I’m thinking these would be super cute hand towel hooks for the bathroom. Thanks for stopping by! I will show you my new paint method in my next post so stay tuned. ~Whitney

Do You Know How to Boil an Egg? A few years ago, a friend called me, to ask what I thought might be the stupidest question I’d ever heard. “Do you know how to boil an egg?” I laughed at her, thinking how I had admired her so much for being such a great, put together first-time mom and halfway decent cook… but really? As I started to explain to her the concept of getting a pot, filling it with water, putting the eggs in the pot, my smugness started to wear off. OMG, did I know how to boil an egg? I realized that while I had the basic mechanics of how to do it, the subtle nuances that create a gorgeous creamy hard boiled egg were eluding me. Science Lesson – That gray ring around the yolk is actually the iron in the egg yolk reacting with the hydrogen sulfide from the white… and only happens when you over cook it. So with a gazillion eggs from our backyard chickens in hand, I set out to boil the perfect egg. And I was pretty surprised at what I learned. 1) It is actually as easy as you think it should be.
