The eco artists turning trash into treasure In the "Waving Wall," designers and water crisis campaigners Bloo Nation highlight the considerable water footprint linked to the production of day-to-day goods like coffee, jeans and paper. Artist and photographer Mandy Barker has created a series of images, dubbed "SOUP," that highlight the mass accumulation of discarded plastic and debris in an area of The North Pacific Ocean known as The Garbage Patch. "The Ice Typography series consists of three-dimensional words fabricated in ice that speak to our relationship with the environment," says Canadian artits Nicole Dextras. "These frozen words absorb light, melt and eventually leave no trace ... They are signs with nothing to sell, hoping to gain your attention for only a brief moment of reflection on the natural world around us." These ethereal "Frozen Trees," installed at a plaza in downtown Lisbon, Portugal, are made from thousands of IKEA plastic bag dispensers.
Tape, Pencil and Resin: The Art of Brooks Salzwedel I’m very intrigued by Californian artist Brooks Salzwedel’s unique style and approach to these delicate works, that combine nature and rigid human-made structures. It’s nice to see work that brings in different non-digital materials to what we’re used to. Using a combination of Staedler Graphite pencils ranging from 6H to 9B, tape and ‘Awful toxic resin‘, Brooks creates images that look like relics of nature and other objects frozen in time. I also love the gloomy and almost real effect that’s created by having elements between semi-transparent layers. They are also reminiscent of some of the pictures of flattened leaves you’d get in school science books. ‘When working on a piece I ask myself what images I want as the focus or in the foreground then literally draw the images on the layer that coincides with the layer in depth.

She began as a self-described “realistic figure painter,” and worked through the struggles common to anyone who endeavors upon an artistic pursuit, that of searching for one’s own voice in the chosen medium. Fast forward to the 21st century where the evolution of Braun’s work has brought us to the Fingerings series, a collection of charcoal dust landscapes and abstracts “painted” using not brushes but her fingertips.
