But the need to keep things interesting and wrap the show up in an hour means the technology used in each episode bears little resemblance to the work of real forensic experts. Or does it? When it comes to computer forensics, today's tools are becoming more advanced, leaving fewer places to hide information. This tension between fact and fiction took on a whole new dimension when Microsoft's police-only forensic toolkit was leaked on the internet. Reports say that it has more in common with CSI than The Bill. We're going to show you how to mimic Microsoft's offering using open-source software to unlock Windows accounts, investigate suspicious activity, see any file on a Windows disk and even peruse files that others believe have been permanently deleted. Forensic toolkit During November 2009, it was announced that someone had leaked Microsoft's secret crime-fighting software online.

The Unreal Universe Reality, as we sense it, is not quite real. The stars we see in the night sky, for instance, are not really there. They may have moved or even died by the time we get to see them. This unreality is due to the time it takes for light from the distant stars and galaxies to reach us. Even the sun that we know so well is already eight minutes old by the time we see it. What is surprising (and seldom highlighted) is that when it comes to sensing motion, we cannot back-calculate in the same kind of way as we can to correct for the delay in observation of the sun. Einstein chose to resolve the problem by treating perception as distorted and inventing new fundamental properties in the arena of physics - in the description of space and time. Einstein instead redefined simultaneity by using the instants in time we detect the event. The mathematical difference spawns different philosophical stances, which in turn percolate to the understanding of our physical picture of reality. About the Author

16 things I know are true but haven't quite learned yet There’s a difference between knowing something and living as if it were true. At the end of 2013, these truths are all lingering on that awkward threshold, for me anyway. 1) The sooner you do something, the more of your life you get to spend with that thing done — even though it takes less effort (or at least no more) than it will later. It’s the ultimate sure-thing investment and I pass it up all the time. 2) I never regret working out. 3) Whenever I’m playing with my phone I am only shortening my life. 4) Nothing makes me more productive and in-the-moment than a clean house. 5) Minute-for-minute, nothing I do is more rewarding than meditation. 6) Creative work is something that can be done at any time. 7) Acting the way you want to feel usually works. 8) Ninety-five per cent of my happiness comes from having a home, a functioning body and something to eat. 9) Our minds are geared to manage much less than we typically end up managing. Goodbye 2013, you were great. Photo by David Cain

28 of the best pieces of advice about life you'll ever read Have the courage to live a life true to yourself, not the life others expect of you. Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity. “There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.” Don’t make decisions when you’re angry. “Never argue with a stupid person, they’ll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.” Only pack what you can carry yourself. Remember you’ll always regret what you didn’t do rather than what you did. “You’d worry less about what people think about you if you knew how seldom they do.” If you blame it on someone else, don’t expect it to get better. “You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, but there will always be someone who hates peaches.” If the grass is greener on the other side, there’s probably more manure there. Don’t give up what you want most for what you want now. With regards to the opposite sex: If you look hungry, you’ll starve.

30 Of The Hardest (But Most Necessary) Things That Must Be Done To Achieve Success Success is defined differently for everyone; however, facing difficulties on the road to success is a common denominator for anyone pursuing his or her passions. What separates those who see their dreams through and those who don’t is the ability to do what others will not. Everyone can dream of eventual success, but accomplishing one’s goals requires taking on the difficult tasks and functions for which many people do not have the courage or stamina. Winston Churchill said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” Taking on the hard tasks time and time again is what defines a person’s character and generates the most rewarding results. Success is not a tangible product.
