Here are the lists I’ve revised and updated that share resources on teaching and learning about math: The Kids Should See This (K-7) - Awesome Science Videos “Not made for kids… but perfect for them”? YES! Frankly, a lot of kid-targeted media is mind-numbingly difficult to watch, often full of simplistic narration, smart-alecky dialogue, or wacky noises. Instead, TKSST surfaces media that’s not made specifically for children, but that can be meaningful to anyone of any age. Each video on TKSST is selected to contribute to a kid-friendly corner on the internet that doesn’t underestimate what children can learn or what they might be interested in.

Empowering Students Through Multimedia Storytelling Perceptions of people and events are very much dependent upon who you are and what your experience has been. Events in Ferguson and Baltimore, among others, highlight our misunderstandings of each other, and how the same facts can be interpreted entirely differently. What's worse, people of color and underrepresented groups are defined by journalists covering these events, who themselves don't reflect the ethnic composition of our country as a whole. Recent studies have proven that stories can change perceptions and even make people more tolerant. Rather than wait to be defined by others, it's important that students learn to create understanding by sharing their story, their worldview, their concerns, and their triumphs with others.

A Math Framework for Multiple Grade Levels As a K–12 district math coach, I travel to 67 classrooms and participate in math instruction at different grade levels. Traveling outside of my school district, I’ve communicated with many pre-K through university math educators in person, on campuses, at conferences, and through social media. I’ve encountered rich math experiences at the secondary level, but found that they could not easily be transferred to primary classrooms. Likewise, I’ve experienced some highly effective practices in primary classrooms that would be difficult to implement in secondary settings. And I’ve noticed that elementary teachers generally converse with other elementary teachers and secondary teachers most often converse with one another.

When I was a middle school and high school student the vocabulary of math often tripped me up and having a glossary of terms often helped me be able to complete my homework assignments. Here are five mathematics glossaries that students can access online. The McGraw Hill Mathematics eGlossary provides written and verbal definitions and explanations of mathematics terms. A brief history of numerical systems - Alessandra King A numerical system is a set of symbols and rules used to represent numbers. All civilizations had to deal with expressing ever larger numerical quantities and they all faced the same issues. A look at the different ways humans across the planet and across the ages handled this challenge is fascinating. Among the many accounts of this long intellectual adventure, a couple are particularly readable and useful for our ends: Steven Strogatz’s section in his book “The Joy of X", excerpts of which are available online, and the article “Historical Counting Systems” in the book “Math in Society” by Lippman (Pierce College) which also provides clarifying examples and practice exercises.
