Whenever I have to sit and wait somewhere, like at a doctor's office or for my number to be called at the DMV, for example, I find myself reaching for my phone to check Instagram or Facebook—even though I know that this can have a negative effect on my posture. As new stories are made available, they will be posted on the main page, then added to this book (to save the Baen Barflies the trouble of doing it themselves). This is our compilation of short stories for 2019. This Wrongfully Convicted Man Spent 19 Years in Death Row; Here’s How Meditation Saved Him “I am a magician.” That’s how Damien Echols begins his recent piece on Vice. But he doesn’t saw anyone in half or pull a bunny out of hat. Echols is a truly fascinating man, and one of the reasons he’s so interesting is because, in 1993, he was arrested on three counts of capital murder and, nine months later, was sentenced to death. In 2011, new evidence came to light and he was exonerated after 19 years on death row. “Prison is a dark and stagnant place,” says Echols.
