Carol Dweck Explains The “False” Growth Mindset That Worries Her | MindShift | KQED News Carol Dweck has become the closest thing to an education celebrity because of her work on growth mindset. Her research shows that children who have a growth mindset welcome challenges as opportunities to improve, believing that their abilities can change with focused effort. Kids with fixed mindsets, on the other hand, believe they have a finite amount of talent that can't be altered and shy away from challenges that might reveal their inabilities. Dweck believes educators flocked to her work because many were tired of drilling kids for high-stakes tests and recognized that student motivation and love for learning was being lost in the process. In an interview with The Atlantic, Dweck explained to reporter Christine Gross-Loh all the ways she sees growth mindset being misappropriated. False growth mindset is saying you have growth mindset when you don't really have it or you don’t really understand [what it is].

Creativity for Life Six-Figure Businesses Built for Less Than $100: 17 Lessons Learned Photo: 401K. The following article is a guest post by Chris Guillibeau, who’s traveled to 150+ countries and studied more micro-businesses than anyone I know. I hope you love this piece as much as I did. Enter Chris Over the past several years, I’ve been on a quest to study micro-businesses—small operations (typically one person) that make $50,000 a year or more (often a lot more). I wanted to hear from all kinds of businesses–both offline and online–to decipher what made them so successful. After much effort, a small team and I narrowed down the case studies to a subset of 70 that I focused on for final analysis. Here is a highly-condensed list of 17 lessons learned… The 17 Lessons of $100 Start-ups Note: Links show the businesses in action. Growth Mindset: Clearing up Some Common Confusions | MindShift | KQED News By Eduardo Briceño A growth mindset is the understanding that personal qualities and abilities can change. It leads people to take on challenges, persevere in the face of setbacks, and become more effective learners. As more and more people learn about the growth mindset, which was first discovered by Stanford Professor Carol Dweck, we sometimes observe some confusions about it. Recently some critiques have emerged. Of course we invite critical analysis and feedback, as it helps all of us learn and improve, but some of the recent commentary seems to point to misunderstandings of growth mindset research and practice. Confusion #1: What a growth mindset is When we ask people to tell us what the growth mindset is, we often get lots of different answers, such as working hard, having high expectations, being resilient, or more general ideas like being open or flexible. Confusion #2: To foster a growth mindset, simply praise children for working hard Deepening our understanding over time

Creative Kickstart: 5 Ways to Creatively Organize Your Time, Mind, and Workspace It's been a few weeks since the last post in the Creative Kickstart series, but it's back in action, and here to help inspire you and motivate your creative process with the best installment yet! Through conversations with creative friends and associates, I've noticed a common "issue" we all seem to share: disorganization. As artistic people, we have constant ideas firing off in our brains, and when we're in the mood to create, we will passionately throw ourselves into a project. For me, this often results in my studio looking like it was hit by a tornado. Creative people also tend to function better doing what feels the most interesting at the time, rather than working on things that may be necessary but aren't naturally appealing. But what if we simply don't feel like it??? 5. Do you have any tips for creative organization and time management? P.S.

Sean Parker's Airtime Officially Launches The much hyped, yet highly secretive Airtime, founded by Sean Parker and Shawn Fanning, has finally revealed itself to be a browser-based video chatting application to help you create shared experiences with people you know and people you’ve never met before. The app lets you connect with existing Facebook friends, but most importantly, it connects you anonymously with strangers, finding them in relation to your location and interests. Essentially, it’s like Chat Roulette, but not nearly as creepy, and with little to zero nudity. From Jimmy Fallon, who opened the event presentation (Joel Mchale, Ed Helms, Jim Carrey and Snoop Dogg also took part): “Airtime is going to change the whole way we connect on the Internet.” It allows you to “make new friends based on interests. We first heard wind of the startup back in September, where we only knew it was operating in the live video space. From the release: What is Airtime?

Blog | screw work let's play I'm a great believer in the power of blogging for almost any project or business as I explain in Secret 6: How to play the fame game in Screw Work, Let's Play. Blogging allows you to play out your idea in public and engage your audience, followers, or potential customers in the process. It's ideal for 'thought leaders' who have something interesting to say about their field and of course it's superb for writers. And I believe every website should include a blog even if it's only an occasionally updated "News and articles" page. But blogging takes time - quite a lot of it to do well. Tumblelogs A tumblelog is a simpler form of blog consisting of a long flowing list of images, videos and short text extracts (such as quotes). I maintain an irregularly updated tumblelog DesignPorn containing images of my favourite contemporary architecture and interior design. Check out Tumblr or Soup.io. Startup Copycats: You’re Doing it Wrong. Editor’s note: This is a guest post by Stefano Bernardi. Stefano recently left his job in Venture Capital in Europe and moved to San Francisco joining the founding team of Betable, where he works on the platform product. He is a part-time hacker, angel investor and product advisor, and was selected from more than 300 people to “shadow” Dave McClure at 500 Startups. You can read more about him, his posts and his tweets. Yesterday I was having brunch with another Italian entrepreneur in San Francisco. I’m not going to debate on the morality of it, I’ll just assume that someone has decided to clone an American startup in a foreign market and I’ll try to give some advice regarding what type of projects to choose. Don’t clone consumer Internet startups. Consumer Internet is a single winner market, where only one gorilla company emerges. Please do not clone Pinterest. Social software is becoming inherently international. If you still really want to create a copycat… Regulated Startups
