Tips for the trails as hiking season picks up When it comes to spring hiking in the Adirondacks, mud is usually a given. Yet as I prepared to bang off my shoes after climbing the 3,694-foot Hurricane Mountain near Keene last week, I found nothing. Only a few traces of crusty dirt clung to my ankles, and the rubber soles were clean. A mild winter and fairly dry spring stunted the mud season, which typically ranges from late April to early June, according Adirondack Mountain Club Executive Director Neil Woodworth. Heart of the High Peaks While some of the state’s 46 tallest mountains, the High Peaks, continuously attract crowds, Woodworth provided other options. “You have to know your own conditioning,” he said. More family-friendly ascents near Keene Valley include Rooster Comb, Noonmark, Round and Baxter mountains. “They’re not the highest peaks, but they offer outstanding views,” Woodworth said. Some trailheads, such as Hurricane from Route 9N, have limited parking so arrive early or plan alternatives. Closer to home Be prepared

Back Country Camping Skip to main navigation One of the best opportunities to experience the beauty and solitude of New York's forests is through back country or primitive camping. It is a rustic, self-dependent experience in which campers carry in and out their supplies and tents in order to reach more secluded forest areas. Where to camp Back-country camping is allowed on Forest Preserve lands in the Adirondack and Catskill Parks as well as State Forests (including reforestation areas and multiple use areas). Designated primitive campsites You may also camp at any designated primitive campsite. Campers are encouraged to use these campsites. Camp here marker All designated primitive campsites have yellow and black "Camp Here" marker. Primitive campsites are first-come-first-served, and cannot be reserved. Areas where camping is not allowed Camping is typically prohibited in Unique Areas, Wildlife Management Areas, Historic and Nature Preserves, and Conservation Easements. After Quietly Raising $20M, Zerve Opens Its Local Activity Platform To Consumers Zerve, a startup backed by the likes of DFJ and Yahoo founder Jerry Yang that has built a merchant platform for local businesses to list activities, and then take sign-ups and payments for them — think OpenTable for events — is today kicking off a new phase in its life. It’s opening up for business as a direct-to-consumer portal, taking what was once a back-end platform that powered listings and sales for other businesses and making it open to all. The move comes as Zerve gears up also to launch its first partnerships with larger platforms that have also been eyeing up the activity space but have yet to build any services like these of their own. Based in New York, Zerve has actually been around since 2003, and in that time has passed some significant milestones. “Since founding in 2003, Zerve has been quietly going about executing our B2B business, leading to 12 straight years of growth,” he says. So why the move now to expand the platform?
