Extensive Archive of Avant-Garde & Modernist Magazines (1890-1939) Now Available Online
Having once been involved in the founding of an arts magazine, I have experienced intimately the ways in which such an endeavor can depend upon a community of equals pooling a diversity of skills. The process can be painful: egos compete, certain elements seek to dominate, but the successful product of such a collaborative effort will represent a living community of artists, writers, editors, and other masters of technique who subordinate their individual wills, temporarily, to the will of a collective, creating new gestalt identities from conceptual atoms. As Monoskop---“a wiki for collaborative studies of art, media and the humanities”---points out, “the whole” of an arts magazine, “could become greater than the sum of its parts.” Often when this happens, a publication can serve as the platform or nucleus of an entirely new movement.

Virgil Vernier is one of the singular new voices in French cinema – a keen observer of globalized Europe whose work blends fiction, documentary and myth. He films contemporary characters in an understated style sensitive to the landscapes and history that have shaped them, and leaving open the possibility for these subjects to surprise or captivate us. His most recent, Locarno-selected film Sapphire Crystal chronicles the detachment and ennui of Switzerland’s young and super-rich, the “jeunesse dorée”. It takes place over the course of a night, segmented into three moments and locations: an exclusive club, a luxurious home and the advertising-lit streets of Geneva. Certainly for many who would rather watch the former any day of the week, even the play-by-play of technical categories repays attention. Yet people who think of the Oscars as a major sporting event with big stars and blockbusters going head-to-head can still appreciate the show as more than spectacle. How else, for example, would most of us learn about brilliant animated short films like the National Film Board of Canada’s Animal Behaviour, made by husband and wife team Alison Snowden and David Fine and nominated in this year’s Oscars?

These artworks and photographs are from the library at Wellcome Collection and have been collected over several decades. Most of the works were acquired between 1890 and 1936 by Sir Henry Wellcome and his agents across the globe. The images reflect Wellcome’s collecting interests and were intended to form a documentary resource that reflects the cultural and historical contexts of health and medicine.

Space in Images
Captured on 1 October 2018 by the Copernicus Sentinel-2A satellite, this image features part of northeast Kenya – an area east of the East African Rift. The region tends to be very arid and this false-colour image has been processed to highlight different types of rock, soil and sand in pinks, purples and yellows. The bright green at the top of the image depicts vegetation, but the rest of the area appears relatively devoid of vegetation.
