Can Reading Make You Happier? Several years ago, I was given as a gift a remote session with a bibliotherapist at the London headquarters of the School of Life, which offers innovative courses to help people deal with the daily emotional challenges of existence. I have to admit that at first I didn’t really like the idea of being given a reading “prescription.” I’ve generally preferred to mimic Virginia Woolf’s passionate commitment to serendipity in my personal reading discoveries, delighting not only in the books themselves but in the randomly meaningful nature of how I came upon them (on the bus after a breakup, in a backpackers’ hostel in Damascus, or in the dark library stacks at graduate school, while browsing instead of studying). But the session was a gift, and I found myself unexpectedly enjoying the initial questionnaire about my reading habits that the bibliotherapist, Ella Berthoud, sent me. Bibliotherapy is a very broad term for the ancient practice of encouraging reading for therapeutic effect.

Glottopedia: Enciclopedia lingüística Glottopedia is a comprehensive web-based free-content encyclopedia of linguistics that any linguist can contribute to. It is modeled on Wikipedia, a general-knowledge encyclopedia for nonspecialist readers. Each registered user may create new articles or modify existing ones. But there are three important differences: Authors of Glottopedia articles should be trained linguists or students with a profound linguistic background. For this reason, authors have to create an account with their real names and log in before working on an article; in contrast to Wikipedia, anonymous editing is not allowed (in this regard, Glottopedia works like Citizendium).Articles in Glottopedia don't have to be intelligible to all. Some of them will refer to highly specialized phenomena and concepts, which will be relevant for only a small number of specialists.

The Language Show Modern Foreign Language Knowledge Organisers (MFL KOs), aka parallel texts, sentence builders, speaking mats, writing mats, mindmaps or even vocabulary lists, organise knowledge required to be proficient in a foreign language. Some see the KO as a new phenomenon with its own pedagogy and place in the MFL classroom, others see them as a ‘new name, same thing,’ albeit still a useful way of engaging students, supporting MFL teaching and learning and reigniting MFL pedagogy. In this talk, Richard Bellworthy, secondary head of MFL and founder of Facebook group, MFL Knowledge Organisers (6K followers), presents the KO model as an effective alternative, but also an optimal enhancement of colleagues’ current practice in the languages classroom.

Week after week, my email is flooded with requests for letters of recommendation. It's not my students' fault. They only ask because college admissions offices or program directors want them. Last year, because of one program I introduced students to, I had fifteen recommendations to write within a couple of weeks.
The Mystery of People Who Speak Dozens of Languages Last May, Luis Miguel Rojas-Berscia, a doctoral candidate at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, in the Dutch city of Nijmegen, flew to Malta for a week to learn Maltese. He had a hefty grammar book in his backpack, but he didn’t plan to open it unless he had to. “We’ll do this as I would in the Amazon,” he told me, referring to his fieldwork as a linguist. How to Teach Yourself Anything in Less Than Three Months Self-education can be wonderful and frustrating at the same time. If you go about it correctly, you can teach yourself anything in just a few months. Poorly applied, however, self-education can be a stressful nightmare. Derek Abbott's Animal Noise Page In different languages what do we say to mimic animal sounds? Below is the world's biggest multilingual list. A guiding principle behind this list is to visualise a comic book, in your language, and imagine what would be written in the text balloon coming from the mouth of an animal. For languages that use a different alphabet, I have tried to transliterate the word into the English alphabet for ease of comparison.
