The year was 1969, and it was Friday, Aug. 15, the first of three days of what would become the most iconic music festival of all time — The Woodstock Music and Art Fair. With the golden anniversary of Woodstock on the horizon, Louisville natives Karen Knight-Wilburn and Nancy Brown — who were 19 years old in the summer of '69 — recount their experiences during that weekend 50 years ago. 'We had no idea what to expect' The friends had spent the summer working at a motel in Cape Cod and had noticed a poster in a store window advertising a three-day music festival with some big-name performers.

The cost was $6 per day or a whopping $18 to attend Friday through Sunday. "We had no idea what to expect," Knight-Wilburn said. Deep Purple’s Smoke On The Water: so who actually was the “stupid with a flare gun”? As most rock fans know, Deep Purple’s most famous song ‘Smoke On The Water’ was based on an actual real life event.

In December 1971 the band were planning to record their forthcoming album Machine Head at the Montreux Casino in Switzerland. Used for live concerts throughout the year, Frank Zappa’s performance on 4th December was to be the last of the season, after which Deep Purple would be able to have the run of the place to themselves and the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio would be parked up outside to capture everything on tape. Unfortunately, as we all know, it didn’t quite work out that way. 21 giugno 1985. Il primo concerto di Bruce Springsteen a San Siro - Spettakolo.it. Avanti per sempre, Bruce. How Bruce Springsteen Agreed To Do a Super Bowl Commercial for Jeep - Variety

The musician known as “The Boss” will command two minutes of commercial time in Super Bowl LV Sunday night, all part of a mammoth Jeep ad meant to reflect a national mood of coming together after four years of politics and polarization. The spot does something else, too: It ends a decade-long quest by one of the industry’s most colorful marketing executives to convince the iconic artist behind stirring songs like “Born in the U.S.A.,” “Growing Up” and “The Rising” to do something he has never done before — align himself with an advertiser.

The commercial is designed to spur viewers to mend the various rifts that have erupted in the nation in recent years. Patti Smith Recounts Her Life With Robert Mapplethorpe in Her Memoir 'Just Kids' Each morning, after she records some “dream residue” in a notebook, Patti Smith walks from her brownstone on the edge of Soho to a coffee shop on Bedford Street, where she orders one cup of coffee and another of hot water, diluting the first with the second as she goes.

She misplaced her glasses so she can’t do much in the way of work today—Smith toggles among music, prose, and photography, devoting equal time to each—but yesterday she was diligent, scribbling an elegy to Edgar Allan Poe and shooting some surreal photos in bed of a plaster replica of William Blake’s head, tucking his chin in her sheets. “A day doesn’t go by where I don’t create something,” says Smith. “Sometimes it’s a rough day and I’m about to go to sleep at eleven o’clock, but I’ll get my Polaroid and take pictures of a series of things. Then I go to bed really happy because I have something to look at, something I did.”

Rewinding Jimi Hendrix’s National Anthem. I knew that he had performed at Woodstock, that mythic experiment in living free from status-quo strictures held on a farm somewhere in New York (I tried to imagine the farms in the Wisconsin village where I lived holding such an event), and soon I was able to acquire a VHS cassette of Michael Wadleigh’s epic documentary of the festival.

Rewinding Jimi Hendrix’s National Anthem

After all the footage of scaffold assembly, the interviews with stoned pilgrims, the endless P.A. announcements (watch out for that brown acid), the rain and mud, and the often great music, there came, near the end, footage of Jimi playing “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” a tune I knew well, which then segued into “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The 50 Greatest Live Albums Ever 10-1 - The 50 Greatest Live Albums Ever. 10.

The Allman Brothers Band – At Fillmore East By the time At Fillmore East had climbed into the Top 10 in the US, The Allman Brothers Band were being hailed in print as ‘the best rock’n’roll group in America.’ Today, it’s the band’s defining moment. With lengthy jams the vehicles for some energetic ensemble playing and inspired soloing, At Fillmore East is also one of rock’s great live albums. Across the years, punk music has seen multiple bands and sub-genres develop alongside the emergence of unique fashion trends and, most importantly, an entirely new mentality.

The 7 iconic women in punk who changed music forever

This, partly, is due to the great number of female superstars who have revolutionised the genre over the years. We thought we’d look back at some of those iconic women because, after all, you can never get enough of these timeless goddesses of punk who have helped shape today’s musical landscape. Before we get stuck in to our list of remarkable punk women, it’s important to remember that one of the rare achievements linked to punk music is undoubtedly the beginning of equality between male and female performers. Even after many girl bands such as The Ronettes and The Shangri-Las made themselves known in the sixties, rock music was still a man’s territory, and rare were the women who surpassed the wrongful perception of their gender at the time, and more importantly, gained the recognition they deserved.

CBGB's last show sees Patti Smith cover Ramones, Lou Reed. When Hilly Kristal, the legendary owner of punk Mekkah CBGB’s in New York, was finally forced to give in to the financial demands of a small music venue in a big city and close down the iconic location there was one woman determined to make sure the venue got the send-off it deserved—the punk poet, Patti Smith.

Officially closing its grimy doors on October 15th 2006, the iconic New York stalwart was formerly a biker bar but was transformed under Kristal to become one of the most important venues in the country during the late ’70s and ’80s. The letters CBGB stood for Country, BlueGrass, and Blues, which all speak to Kristal’s original vision. Despite this somewhat wholesome vision, CBGB soon became a famed venue of punk rock and new wave bands like the Ramones, Television, Patti Smith Group, Blondie, and Talking Heads and then on to provide one of the only welcoming platforms for hardcore punk during the ’80s.

The final letter Patti Smith sent to Robert Mapplethorpe. Most rock and roll relationships are a crash, bang, wallop affair. Normally over before any feelings beyond infatuation can set in, it has been a sore spot for many musicians in their time. Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe’s relationship lasted a lifetime. When Smith made the leap from New Jersey to New York to pursue her ideals of artistic bliss, she did so without a safety net.

Soon enough when a young photographer named Robert began helping her out, she and he would go on to become lifelong friends and entwined lovers. Arriving in 1967 to the bright lights of New York City must’ve been a daunting thing for anybody to do, let alone a young girl in the late sixties. Mapplethorpe went on to become an acclaimed photographer while Smith became the Godmother of Punk, the two sharing each other’s lives platonically following the end of their romantic relationship.
