Half Baked Harvest - Made with Love

Some of them super weird (like really weird), some of them super creepy, some super nosy and most that are thankfully – normal. By far my most asked question is how I come up with new recipes. I think I get asked this everyday, and not just by readers. I swear my mom asks me this all the time and then continues to say she would NEVER want to do what I do. To her, cooking and photographing all day, then writing, editing and brainstorming at night, yeah, she says it sounds terrible. We could not be more different. But she did unknowingly provided me with my secret weapon. Some people go to their mom or grandma’s for family recipes or ideas when their brains are not producing anything worth eating. But me? Obviously, she’s not really a great source of ideas for me. But you see, she has this friend. I call her Mrs. But anyway, Mrs. She knows how to make pretty much everything and she does it from scratch too.

This is so simple. And the flavors are insanely good. Skinny Orange Chicken Recipe. Skinny Orange Chicken This "skinny" orange chicken recipe is made with a heavenly orange chicken sauce, but without all of the calories of traditional Chinese orange chicken.

Fuchsia Dunlop's Braised Chicken with Dried Shiitake Mushrooms

There is just so much good stuff out right now. (I promise to do a post or two on new cookbooks and my cookbook collection in general soon. Don't you love knowing what other people's cookbook shelves are like? More fascinating than the bathroom cabinet!) Fuchsia Dunlop's Every Grain of Rice is my latest baby, one I'd had on my wishlist since it was first announced. Every Grain of Rice is Fuchsia's most recent book and it focuses on simple Chinese home cooking, with recipes sourced mostly from the south of the country. The recipe that jumped out at me on my last perusal through the book was a braised dish of chicken and dried shiitake mushrooms. This braise sounded perfect - I was supposed to stir-fry the chicken and aromatics to start, but the bulk of the cooking was going to be braising. Incredible. 1. Having slurped through everything from hearty German spätzle to spicy Chinese beef noodles in unseasonably warm weather, I understand why Karen Zeff's children love her nutty salad so much – silky and tangy, it's the ideal light lunch. Taiwanese Noodles with Meat Sauce Recipe

Despite having an embarrassing amount of cookbooks on my shelves, my family’s favorite recipes are the ones I’ve riffed on from my Mom’s cooking. Earlier this summer, when we took a little vacation to visit parents, Mom made a Taiwanese noodle dish with a hearty meat sauce. To “sell” it to my kids, she called it, “Taiwanese Spaghetti.” Though, in all honesty, meat + noodles need no selling to my kids, they’ll happily eat without reservation. Taiwanese meat sauce is something nearly every Taiwanese mama cooks in weekly rotation, and it’s served over rice or noodles. To make an easy version with everyday ingredients from the local supermarket, I’ve made a few substitutions. Spicy peanut butter noodles - recipe. When I need to rustle up a quick meal out of nothing, I often turn to my stash of dried noodles and Chinese seasonings.

Spicy peanut butter noodles - recipe

A simple bowl of noodles, stirred into excitement by a spicy Sichuanese sauce, finished with a little fresh spring onion greens and some fragrant seeds or nuts, is extremely satisfying and takes less than half an hour to make. This particular recipe is inspired by similar noodle dishes I've tasted in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, although I've used peanut butter instead of the more typical sesame paste. If I happen to have a cucumber or a crisp lettuce in the fridge, I might make a little salad to serve on the side. I try to keep a supply of Clearspring dried udon and buckwheat noodles in my larder, but you can use any kind of dried Chinese or Japanese noodle for this recipe.

If you don't have Chinkiang vinegar, use a marginally smaller amount of red wine vinegar instead: just enough to sharpen up the rich, nutty sauce. The Chinese Takeout Cookbook's Dan Dan Mien Recipe

Recently, I made Steamy Kitchen’s Dan Dan Mien, which my kids loved, and last night, I decided to give Diana Kuan’s version a try from her recently released her first cookbook, The Chinese Takeout Cookbook. Diana Kuan is the writer behind Appetite for China and a cooking teacher. Dan Dan Mien or Noodles (担担面) is considered street food in Sichuan (Dan Dan Mien actually translates into peddler’s noodles).

My sister happened to be visiting for a few days, so she was one of my taste testers for Diana Kuan’s Dan Dan Mien recipe. Stir-fried sprouts with chicken, lemon and chilli recipe. Mixed with soy sauce, rice vinegar, and a touch of sesame oil, this makes an incredible sauce to coat the meat veggies. The one problem with cooking batches of food over high heat is that I inevitably end up with a glaze of browned bits on the bottom of the pan, which often start to scorch partway through cooking. While not terribly authentic, my solution is to add a few tablespoons of water to the pan while the vegetables cook. It helps move cooking along with a little steam action, prevents the browned bits from burning, and adds deep roasted flavors that make the sauce even tastier. Once you have everything chopped and ready to go, this dish comes together in about fifteen minutes. Food - Recipes : Egg fu yung with roasted red pepper and sweet chilli sauce. On our food journey across the world this weekend, I decided to make this great alternative to the usual sweet & sour chicken.
