The other week I wanted an activity that would allow students to have a controlled practice that could be done in small groups, but had a repetitive quality to really practice the target language.
I decided on dominoes. Dominoes is another activity that is an old favorite in the ESL classroom. This article is just my thoughts on how to run the activity and some advice on how you can create your own custom domino sets. As an example, I have chosen to use WH question words. Click on the image to download a PDF copy of this dominoes set. Playing Word Dominoes You can play Word Dominoes, in the same way as a traditional game of dominoes, as a blocking game. Word Dominoes is suitable for 2-4 players, with 3 players being the perfect number. Place the tiles face down on the table, move them about and mix them up. Each player collects 7 titles and keeps them in their hand. The students can play rock, paper, scissors to decide who the first player is.
The game continues. Three Geography Games Based on Google Maps and Google Earth. One of the things that I emphasize to students before they embark on any kind of research or problem-solving task is to take a good long look at the information that they already have before them.
To that end, I'll often request that they construct a list of what they know about a topic or problem before they begin to search. Playing one of the following three Google Maps-based games is a fun way to reinforce the concept of using prior knowledge and observations. GeoGuessr is an addictive geography game that is based on the Google Maps Street View imagery. When you visit GeoGuessr you can choose to play as a single player or you can register to challenge another player. The game is played the same way whether you choose single player or challenge mode. How to Play Crumple & Shoot. I learned how to play Crumple and Shoot from Doris Gannon, a reading teacher I worked with in my first job, and since then I’ve passed it on to more people than I can remember.
It works with students from elementary school through college, and I’ve never had a group who didn’t eventually beg me to play it. Plus, it’s so easy, you could literally start playing it the minute you finish reading these instructions. The only real requirement is that your students need to be able to write easily, so it might not work as well with very young students. Here’s a video overview of how the game works: Download full instructions here: How to Play Crumple & Shoot. Let me know how it goes. Every week for 17 years, I've heard my students ask, "What do I need to do to get an A? " Historically, many have focused on their grade rather than on fundamental skills. My attempt to change this mindset started two years ago when I gamified learning in my classes. After researching gamification and its potential to help students master skills and processes, I used the 3DGameLab and then Gradecraft to develop and implement game-based learning.
In each class, students could choose "quests" that, if completed successfully, earned them badges and experience points. Each open-source badge was developed using Badg.us so that students could take them into the digital universe (e.g. attach to resumes, ePortfolios, etc.) and -- unlike grades on a transcript -- document skills they've mastered. Horse race dictation. It is enjoyable because students are asked to predict the first word, in the same way people try to guess which horse will come first in a race, giving a strong motivation for the short but very intensive listening activity, in the form of a horse race commentary, which gives the solution. PreparationChoose a sentence and write words in random order on the left of the board, as in the example below. You also need to prepare a commentary, which should be challenging enough to make it interesting but not too difficult.
In the example below there is only one major change in order, when, and other minor changes during the race. Alphabet Soup Game - Build words from missing letters! Here are some of the ideas I’ve come up with: 1. Board it and collaborate Instead of (or as well as/before) having learners complete a table in their books, individually, why not put them in teams, put the table on the board and get them to race to complete the table accurately: Kids vocabulary games - learn words. 7 Best Games for Vocabulary Class.
