The Great Thanksgiving Listen. What Is The Great Thanksgiving Listen?
The Great Thanksgiving Listen is a national movement that empowers young people—and people of all ages—to create an oral history of the contemporary United States by recording an interview with an elder, mentor, friend, or someone they admire using the free StoryCorps App. Interviews become part of the StoryCorps Archive at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Since 2015, The Great Thanksgiving Listen has grown from an experimental challenge issued by our founder, Dave Isay, into a vital intergenerational movement. To date, thousands of high schools from all 50 states have participated and preserved more than 100,000 interviews, providing families with a priceless piece of personal history. Last week I asked my friends Tracy Ferguson and Melanie Smith if they wanted to try out a new digital tool with me called FlipGrid.
I learned about FlipGrid when my dear friend Joyce wrote about it on her SLJ blog. Then we all talked about it a lot at AASL in Hartford last month, so I couldn't wait to try it out with our kids too. Next, we decided to have the students use this series with FlipGrid by giving a book talk over one that they have read and enjoyed. The books have been in the second grade classrooms and they have been reading them for the last couple of weeks.
And they are LOVING them! If you click on Second Grade Fairy Tale FlipGrid now, it will take you into their FlipGrid for the book talks. You just click on the picture of each child to see their recording. Think of all the possibilities for this digital tool! With FlipGrid it would be with students and friends that aren't even in the same school. Here are a few tips to get you started creating and using FlipGrid. I loved it! Mobile Apps.
