ISTE Standards for Educators: Educator - DesignerEducator - Learner UNESCO Standards for Educators: Bipartisan Bill in Congress Seeks to Help Schools Teach AI Literacy. Educators have been thinking about how to explain the benefits and drawbacks of artificial intelligence since ChatGPT made a big splash this past year. Turns out, Congress is thinking about it, too. A bipartisan pair of lawmakers—Reps. Lisa Blunt Rochester, D-Del., and Larry Bucshon, R-Ind. —this month introduced the “Artificial Intelligence Literacy Act.” The technology is increasingly critical to numerous fields—from health care to agriculture—but too few Americans comprehend its power, or potential to create new problems, according to Blunt Rochester and Bucshon’s summary of the legislation. Increasingly, AI literacy will help Americans understand how the technology impacts their lives, as well helping to ensure the nation remains economically competitive and militarily secure, the summary said.

The bill would shine a spotlight on the importance of teaching AI literacy. Importantly, the bill doesn’t set aside new money for teaching AI. Leveraging ChatGPT: Practical Ideas for Educators. The toothpaste is out of the tube! ChatGPT is here and, whether we like it or not, we can’t go back to a time before its arrival. The question now is how do we, as educators, move forward? In case you’ve missed all the hubbub, ChatGPT is a new, advanced chatbot launched by OpenAI in November 2022 that can understand, respond to, and converse with users’ written input similarly to humans—it can even answer questions, tell stories, and engage in conversations. Due to these advanced capabilities, it has been widely discussed and written about, particularly in the field of education, where some experts predict it could disrupt time-honored instructional practices.

ChatGPT itself is a neutral tool, and how it is used depends on the intentions of those who use it. While it’s understandable that the emergence of ChatGPT has sparked such speculation, it's important to remember that technology is not inherently good or evil. In Neal Stephenson’s 1995 science fiction novel, The Diamond Age, readers meet Nell, a young girl who comes into possession of a highly advanced book, The Young Lady’s Illustrated Primer.

The book is not the usual static collection of texts and images but a deeply immersive tool that can converse with the reader, answer questions, and personalize its content, all in service of educating and motivating a young girl to be a strong, independent individual. Such a device, even after the introduction of the Internet and tablet computers, has remained in the realm of science fiction—until now.

Artificial intelligence, or AI, took a giant leap forward with the introduction in November 2022 of ChatGPT, an AI technology capable of producing remarkably creative responses and sophisticated analysis through human-like dialogue. Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, calls artificial intelligence “more profound than fire or electricity or anything we have done in the past.” What Is Generative AI? From superintendents and principals to technology directors and classroom teachers, educators are seeking to understand, while asking so many good questions… - Should we provide access or lock and block? - What boundaries should we set for student and staff use? - What policies should we put in place? - How can AI help me be more efficient in my work? - What does cheating look like in the age of AI? ….and on, and on, and on. Bringing AI Literacy to High Schools (Stanford) It’s the start of English 11 class at Birmingham Charter in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, and teacher Lindsay Humphrey has planned an activity to show how computers experience sound. She will play a song and then ask the students to guess which visual waveform represents the music they heard. The point of the lesson: Music is one of many examples where computers “see” differently from humans. For many in the class, this will be a first exposure to artificial intelligence (AI) technology, and she’s excited to see how they react to it. Humphrey is a Stanford Hollyhock Program alum and her lesson plan is one example of the type of resources coming from the CRAFT (Classroom-ready Resources about AI For Teaching) project in the Graduate School of Education with support from Stanford HAI, Stanford Digital Education, the Stanford Accelerator for Learning, and the McCoy Family Center for Ethics in Society.

Artificial intelligence is growing by leaps and bounds. It's no longer science fiction anymore! Lots of AI tools can serve as our own personal assistants -- answering questions, helping us write text, create images, speak more effectively, and more.

Time has always been a barrier in the classroom. Most teachers would agree that they would be able to do more -- including the things that are most important -- if they had more time. Teachers can find AI tools that are ready to help them out right now. Below is a description of AI and how you can start using it to support your work in class. What is artificial intelligence? Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the ability of a computer or machine to perform tasks that would normally require human intelligence, such as learning, problem-solving, decision-making, and more. AI can be applied to a wide range of areas, including natural language processing, image and video recognition, robotics, and playing at Platinum Play. Bringing AI to School 2023 07. AI Guidance for Schools Toolkit.

This toolkit is designed to help local, state, and national education systems worldwide develop guidance on the responsible use of AI, ensure compliance with relevant policies, and build the capacity of all stakeholders to understand AI and use AI effectively. The recommendations in this toolkit may also inform the early stages of developing policies and procedures, whether mandatory or voluntary. While issuing standalone guidance on AI can be an initial step, it’s also important to consider how and where it makes sense to address AI in existing policies, such as academic integrity, privacy, or responsible use policies. Guidance and policies will benefit from the input and review of various stakeholders, including teachers, parents, and students. Spark: AImagine (Amanda Sandoval) AIeducator Tools.

Students Need to Learn How to Read Scholarly Articles: Here’s How Technology Can Help. Editor’s Note: Today’s post is by Jeremy Dean and Alex Humphreys. Jeremy is Vice President of Education at Hypothesis, a mission-driven software company dedicated to improving online discourse through annotation.

Alex is Vice President, Innovation, at ITHAKA, where he leads a team that scouts and develops the future of research and education through projects, partnerships and investments. Students who learn how to read and engage with scholarly articles as part of their research and writing process develop effective skills that serve them well in college and beyond. We see recognition of this with growing emphasis on undergraduate research and the introduction of science research programs in secondary education. But let’s admit it: reading a scholarly article isn’t easy. A colleague recently shared that her 15 year old daughter is spending hours wading through dense research articles on her own. Can technology help? The concept of annotation is as old as scholarship itself. Here’s how:
