Give Kids Choice Most kids will read more if you truly let them choose what to read. Don’t stress out if it’s the 5th comic book they’ve read this week. You’re helping them build a habit of reading. But, finding good books can be hard for kids. 2. Frequent visits to the library are a wonderful, FREE way to spend a summer day. 3. While we usually think that reading means sitting down with a physical book, mix it up with some other options like e-readers, audiobooks, and magazines. 4. I hate a messy house, but I’ll leave piles of books around because my kids are more likely to pick up a book if they’re scattered around the living room. 5. CHICAGO – The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), has announced its 2020 Great Graphic Novels for Teens list.
The list consists of 103 titles selected from 178 official nominations, which were posted and discussed in blogposts on The Hub. The books, recommended for those ages 12-18, meet the criteria of both good quality literature and appealing reading for teens. View the full list. For Decorate a Donut day, patrons were invited to "Choose your own fun icing and sprinkles combination or turn your donut into a unicorn, monster, ladybug, or other creation! Donuts, decorating ideas, and decorating materials (sprinkles, eyeballs, cookie crumbs, pretzels, icing, other edible embellishments) provided. " Step 1: Get some donuts. I had originally only planned on getting 2 dozen, but the event page on Facebook blew up, so I bought 5 dozen. Cupcake toppers work great on donuts, too. Egg People. I have wanted to do an Easter egg decorating activity with plastic eggs and no dye for a while. I stumbled upon some very cute Egg People printables from Mr. Printables and realized that was my ticket for an egg decorating library event. Because the Sibert Award is granted to nonfiction books, there are many winning and honor books that tie into the invention theme. One of the books we read together is Ballons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet. Ballons Over Broadway informs readers about how the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade first began and teaches about how Tony Sarg (a puppeteer) invented the first balloon floats. As a culminating activity, 2nd graders completed a building challenge where they worked in teams to create their own floats that would suspend above their base using sticks or rods.
