Photo: Jane Dagmi When artist Elayna Toby Singer contemplates a new mixed media assemblage, she pieces together objects from both natural and manmade worlds, re-imagining them in a fresh context. “A single object’s shape, color, and texture can instantly rouse my artistic vision,” says Elayna, whose first found-object kinetic sculpture was inspired by a crushed and discarded pair of eyeglasses.

While she selects twigs, pods, gemstones, beads and shells from relegated jars, bowls, and pots in her studio, no creative gestation is quite complete without a visit to the rust farm. The rust farm is a 50 sq. ft. patch of backyard where assorted metal objects—found, bought at flea markets, and dropped off by friends—are laid out on wire mesh shelves and left to weather in the tropical South Florida climate.

At the rust farm, objects have equal opportunity to transform. Jacqueline rush lee. Jacqueline rush lee. John Simpkins : Artist. Inspired by a powerful dream, I added a small island to the right-side inner panel with 2 tall twin towers made of gold leaf. a lightening bolt struck them from above.

In 2002, I asked a cabinet maker to cut a doorway into the main panel where I had painted a door on the Ark. On the outer panels, I created a bass relief of floating human figures using many layers of gesso in preparation for gilding. The fair offers the rare opportunity for artists operating far outside the regulations of the art world -- whether marginalized, isolated, incarcerated, institutionalized or psychologically compromised -- a space to show the vibrant and singular artworks that don't just reflect their worlds, but constitute them. In anticipation of one of our favorite art events of the year, we're spotlighting a different outsider artist every day. Last week, Simpkins announced the completion of a magnificent triptych painting that will go into the George R. Stroemple Collection. Stroemple, who resides part-time in the Sisters Country, has been a longtime patron of Simpkins' art. The journey began in Napa, California. Simpkins' partner Victor Brumbach had a vivid dream featuring a triptych that presented a stark choice for humanity: engagement with the world and survival or disengagement and destruction. "My partner Victor had a very powerful dream and he was driven after that to write all this stuff down," Simpkins recalled. Brumbach's vision for the painting struck a fundamental artistic chord, one that is recognized but not well understood. Brave Intuitive Painting with Flora Bowley. This cannot be the end of the story. Plastic bags are a cultural misunderstanding. That is why it took conciliatory gestures to grow 18 plastic bags into a wall hanging. And with gestures of joy, 15 plastic bags began to bloom again. 27 other plastic bags began to remember their long history that also includes life on the bottom of a sea. The last time I was working with plastic bags I created patterns with my little frame loom. A week in patched up paper bits: It all started with the patterns that are printed on business letters instead of stamps.

The patched up paper pieces reminded me of lichen. C l a y & P e r s i m m o n s. In Cloud Light. Sweetpea Path: Take me to the river. "Have you ever had that feeling ~ that you'd like to go to a whole different placeand become a whole different self?

Klee – Theater Everywhere. Barbara Baker McIntyre Artist - Artwork / Collage. Barbara McIntyre’s mixed-media collages explore her fascination with the sea and the creatures therein. Her desire to make works that house imagery of fish, birds, texts and patterns alike stems from her early childhood. Her grandfather taught her how to fish at age nine, which gave her the confidence to conquer activities not commonly assigned to young girls.

From then on she grew to have a great admiration for the outdoors, and vowed to stay connected to the “wild things” she shared this world with through her art. Additional elements of her collages lend themselves to surrealism and stream-of-consciousness compositions. Pins from ohmisterfinch.tumblr.com on Pinterest. Donna Downey Studios. FRANCESCO CLEMENTE. Patrick Heron: the growing legacy of genius ‘The work of Patrick Heron is bound up with what is probably the most crucial series of events in British art since the war: the impact of the new American painting, the absorption of its influence and, eventually, a reaction against it and an attempt to go beyond it.

The fact that Heron is exceptionally articulate (having been one of the best English art critics of the post-war period) means that his development can be followed stage-by-stage in a very clear way, which provides valuable insight into the development of recent British painting as a whole.’
