They were originally based on physics Modeling Instruction with added parts borrowed from various sources, including Matt Greenwolfe among others. Contact me if you would like the files in a format other than PDF. I should also note that these are the materials I use with my students and that they are not a fully guided set of documents. Many activities and discussions happen my classes that are invisible from the point of view of the materials. Some of the problems or activities might not be clear when taken out of context (by just viewing these PDFs).
Honors Physics My 2013 updates have tried to make the course a little tighter and sharper based on what my students were able to do last year. To Reassess (or, how to make more work for me) Part of standards based grading is getting students to remediate before being allowed another shot at demonstrating their mastery.
Reassessing shouldn’t be a “free pass.” I think I wrote previously about how I deal with this. They have to send me a form email. When I hit upon this idea, I was worried that students wouldn’t take it seriously — and they would lie about what they did to remediate just to take the reassessment. I am sure that a few did, but my gut feeling, based on the responses I got, was that students were being forthright about what they had done. Conjunctive Standards-Based Grading – Physics! Blog! I’ve had a lot of requests lately to explain my grading system, so I thought I would outline it in as much detail as possible here.
I learned this summer that what I do is apparently called “conjunctive scoring”. That is, students cannot compensate for a low score in one area (say, their understanding of forces) with a high score in another area (say, conservation of energy). Rather, it requires at least a minimum amount of mastery in every area to earn a passing grade overall. STEM Activities and Experiments for Kids. Stuck on Science Home - Stuck on Science.

Transformations In Matter and Energy. BetterLesson. Examples of NGSS Assessment for High School. The Next Generation Science Standards, or NGSS standards, are new, internationally-benchmarked guidelines for science and engineering education in grades K-12.
The new standards reflect an entirely new approach to teaching science in the United States and offer a framework for science education that better reflects the needs of modern society. The NGSS standards were reviewed by tens of thousands of experts across the nation, including teachers at every grade level, specialists in science education, educational researchers, and science policy experts. Currently adopted in 16 states and available nationwide, the NGSS standards emphasize the integration of science content and practice. The Goals of the NGSS Standards. New Visions Science Curriculum. When selecting materials for their classroom, science teachers have to consider a multitude of factors: quality of hands-on experiences, rigorous conceptual development or the ability of students to complete work at or above grade level, integration of literacy skills, and alignment to year-end exams, to name a few.
If you are looking for high school science resources designed by teachers, content experts, and leading institutions that address these factors and more, the New Visions Science Curricula for Living Environment and Earth Science courses provide the support you need. Key Components of our Curricula: Spiraled scope and sequence materials that are aligned to the New York State Core Curriculum in Science and Common Core Learning Standards;Real-world performance tasks that provide context for each unit of study;Experiential learning activities designed using the BSCS 5E Instructional Model;Complete lab sequence that exceeds New York State lab requirements.
Teacher Testimonials. Mystery Science: Lessons for elementary teachers. NGSS Story-Lining: Using Entry Event Videos As Anchoring Phenomena. One of the hidden treasures of NGSS is the incorporation of coherence and phenomena-driven lessons.
These strategies are not found in the standards themselves, but in the EQuIP rubric in the NGSS resource library. A coherent lesson is a lesson that fits into a broader storyline. Coherent lessons flow together like a story, where each lesson connects to the previous one and the story progresses as students work through the unit. This storylining provides students a reason to progress through the unit and gives meaning to each of the lessons within. Next Generation science storylines. Smart Move! - Activity - www.teachengineering.org. New Curriculum Outperforms Traditional Biology Materials. Middle school biology students exposed to new curriculum that makes connections between the physical and life sciences have a better grounding in chemistry once in high school. | Jo Ellen Roseman/AAAS Students using a new middle school curriculum unit developed by Project 2061, AAAS’s long-term science education initiative, had a better understanding of chemistry concepts central to modern biology than students using traditional curriculum materials, according to a newly published study.
Students who used Project 2061’s Toward High School Biology unit also held far fewer misconceptions about atom rearrangement and conservation during chemical reactions than students in a comparison group, according to the study, published in the December 2016 issue of CBE-Life Sciences Education, an online peer-reviewed journal of the American Society for Cell Biology. Through engaging in modeling and scientific explanation students explore curious aspects of the everyday world, discovering how the unseen world of atomic level interactions and energy transformations are responsible for much of what we observe around us. Hello, I am very proud to present the teacher-authored instructional unit samples in Science. Each of these units represents the work of a team of Colorado educators to translate one curriculum overview sample into a full instructional unit with learning experiences, teacher and student resources, assessment ideas, and differentiation options.
To learn more about the unit development process and the unique aspects of the Science units, please consider watching one or more of the instructional unit webinars. Each of the units posted here was authored by a team of Colorado educators. As examples, they are intended to provide support (or conversation/creation starting points) for teachers, schools, and districts as they make their own local decisions around the best instructional plans and practices for all students.
