The Omidyar Network and the (Neoliberal) Future of Education. 5 min read This article is part of my research into "who funds education technology," which I plan to expand with my Spencer Education Fellowship The Omidyar Network announced earlier this week that it has invested in Data & Society, a New York City-based research institute co-founded by danah boyd.
The two-year $850,000 grant will fund Data & Society’s work on “the social and cultural issues arising from the development of data-centric technology.” The grant is just one of a slew of recent investments by the Omidyar Network in companies and organizations that work in and around education technology, including Khan Academy, Hypothes.is, and Edsurge. And much like Edsurge (as well as another portfolio company, Glenn Greenwald’s The Intercept), the Omidyar Network’s investment in Data & Society certainly raises questions about that organization’s ability to be “independent” in its research and analysis.

Sometimes it’s for good reasons (a cabin upgrade), sometimes for not such good reasons (the captain’s acting like he’s been at the rum rations). However, while you can know what you’re leaving, it is almost impossible to know what you’re joining. MIT Dean Takes Leave to Start New University Without Lectures or Classrooms. Christine Ortiz is the dean for graduate education and a professor of materials science and engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
In a conversation with The Chronicle, she discusses her ideas about building a new type of college from scratch. Christine Ortiz is taking a leave from her prestigious post as a professor and dean at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to start a radical, new nonprofit university that she says will have no majors, no lectures, and no classrooms. Many details about the new university are still undetermined, she says, but the basic idea is to answer the question, What if you could start a university from scratch for today’s needs and with today’s technology?
Her venture is not the only effort to create a new kind of college — there’s the Minerva Project, created by a tech entrepreneur in San Francisco, and MOOC providers like Udacity, started by a former Stanford University professor. But those are for-profit businesses. Q. A. Q. A. Q. Antioch University eliminates jobs of five presidents. Antioch University has eliminated the president positions and the boards of trustees of all five of its campuses. The Board of Governors -- a fiduciary body -- will now oversee the entire Antioch system, wrote Chancellor Bill Groves in a letter to the Antioch community obtained by Inside Higher Ed. Several members of the now-defunct boards of trustees will be asked to join the Board of Governors, Groves wrote. Groves was named interim chancellor for two years in April. He succeeded Felice Nudelman, who held the post for four years and will now serve as chief global officer for innovation and partnerships.
