Democrats, Trump and the Ongoing, Dangerous Refusal to Learn the Lesson of Brexit. The parallels between the U.K.’s shocking approval of the Brexit referendum in June and the U.S.’s even more shocking election of Donald Trump as president Tuesday night are overwhelming.

Democrats, Trump and the Ongoing, Dangerous Refusal to Learn the Lesson of Brexit

Elites (outside of populist right-wing circles) aggressively unified across ideological lines in opposition to both. Supporters of Brexit and Trump were continually maligned by the dominant media narrative (validly or otherwise) as primitive, stupid, racist, xenophobic, and irrational. In each case, journalists who spend all day chatting with one another on Twitter and congregating in exclusive social circles in national capitals — constantly re-affirming their own wisdom in an endless feedback loop — were certain of victory.

The indisputable fact is that prevailing institutions of authority in the West, for decades, have relentlessly and with complete indifference stomped on the economic welfare and social security of hundreds of millions of people. That message was heard loud and clear. 1. 2. 3. Politics Is the Solution to Our Problems. Politics Is the Solution to Our Problems

(Pablo Martinez Monsivais) We have no illusions about the impact of Donald Trump’s victory. It is a disaster. The prospect of a unified right-wing government, led by an authoritarian populist, represents a catastrophe for working people. There are two ways to respond to this situation. In the coming days and weeks, many pundits will be doing the former. But blaming the American public for Trump’s victory only deepens the elitism that rallied his voters in the first place. Still, a response to Trump that begins and ends with horror is not a political response — it is a form of paralysis, a politics of hiding under the bed.

To believe that Trump’s appeal was entirely based on ethnic nationalism is to believe that a near majority of Americans are driven only by hate and a shared desire for a white supremacist political program. We don’t believe that. Politics Is the Solution to Our Problems. ‘Black Lives Matter has a plantation mentality’ ‘I don’t know what Black Lives Matter does, so I can’t tell you how it compares to what the Black Panther Party was.

‘Black Lives Matter has a plantation mentality’

I know what the BPP was. I know the lives we lost, the struggle we put into place, the efforts we made, the assaults on us by the police and government – I know all that. I don’t know what Black Lives Matter does. So if you can tell me, I’ll give you my thoughts.’ So says Elaine Brown, activist, singer and former chairwoman of the Black Panther Party, talking to me from her home in Oakland, California. I ask Brown about Black Lives Matter, the movement that erupted in the wake of the shooting of Mike Brown, an unarmed black teenager, in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014. ‘There is no comparison’, she says.
