New John Cook 97% Consensus Climate Change Video

Willie Soon; John Cook has released a new video which attacks a climate skeptic straw man, to try to bolster his 97% climate consensus claim. Watch the video, judge for yourself. What do I mean by “climate skeptic straw man”? When John Cook claims 97% of climate scientists believe humans cause global warming, he is likely absolutely correct. Most climate scientists whom opponents identify as “climate deniers” believe anthropogenic CO2 causes global warming. But there is a huge difference between believing humans cause global warming, and believing that humans cause significant global warming, or that humans are the ONLY cause of modern era global warming.

Believing that humans cause global warming is not the same thing as believing that anthropogenic CO2 emissions are leading us towards an imminent climate catastrophe. For anyone interested, the “Herr John Cook” image comes from a set of creepy images Cook published on Skeptical Science. Like this: Related. America Being Misled by Cook, Oreskes, Lewandowsky and Maibach. Guest “liar, liar, pants on fire” by David Middleton Hat tip to Dr.

America Being Misled by Cook, Oreskes, Lewandowsky and Maibach

Willie Soon… America Misled: How the fossil fuel industry deliberately misled Americans about climate change Over the past few decades, the fossil fuel industry has subjected the American public to a well-funded, well-orchestrated disinformation campaign about the reality and severity of human-caused climate change. The purpose of this web of denial has been to confuse the public and decision-makers in order to delay climate action and thereby protect fossil fuel business interests and defend libertarian, free-market conservative ideologies.

The fossil fuel industry’s denial and delay tactics come straight out of Big Tobacco’s playbook. Ian Plimer: 97% Of Scientists Agree On Nothing. It is often claimed that 97 per cent of scientists conclude that humans are causing global warming.

Ian Plimer: 97% Of Scientists Agree On Nothing

Is that really true? No. It is a zombie statistic. In the scientific circles I mix in, there is an overwhelming scepticism about human-induced climate change. Oreskes, Harvard and the Destruction of Scientific Revolutions. Guest post by Bradley Keyes consensus (kənˈsɛnsəs) — n. general or widespread agreement (esp. in the phrase consensus of opinion ) usage Since ‘consensus’ refers to a collective opinion, the words ‘of opinion’ in the phrase ‘consensus of opinion’ are redundant and should therefore be avoided Source: consensus.

Collins English Dictionary—Complete & Unabridged 10th Edition. As we all know, The Consensus is Strengthening. It would be “remarkable” enough, to use Oreskes’ favorite adjective, if more and more scientific papers endorsed AGW every time you sampled the literature. The myth of the 97% climate change consensus. What is the origin of the false belief – constantly repeated by President Obama, the media and others – that almost all scientists agree about global warming?

The myth of the 97% climate change consensus

Claims continue to be made that “97% of scientists agree that climate change is real, man-made and dangerous.” That’s what Secretary of State John Kerry told graduating Boston College students. It’s what President Obama said in his State of the Union address and a recent tweet. There’s just one problem – aside from the fact that this assertion is being used to help justify policies and regulations that are closing down fossil fuel power plants and crippling our economy. The claim is completely bogus. By Joseph Bast and Roy Spencer Joseph Bast and Roy Spencer. Cook’s 97% Scam Debunked. By Paul Homewood Yesterday, we saw how easily debunked the original “97% of scientists agree” turned out to be.

Cook’s 97% Scam Debunked

There therefore had to be a renewed attempt by the warmist establishment to make the claim stick, so step forward John Cook with a much more sophisticated scam. Jose Duarte, expert in Social Psychology, Scientific Validity, and Research Methods, has actually called the Cook paper “multiply fraudulent”, and, as far as I know, Cook has taken no action to challenge the claim.

This, as much as anything else, shows just what a con trick the whole business was. How many scientists, after all, would accept being called fraudulent without taking action? This was the Abstract: Abstract. 97 Articles Refuting The "97% Consensus" The 97% "consensus" study, Cook et al. (2013) has been thoroughly refuted in scholarly peer-reviewed journals, by major news media, public policy organizations and think tanks, highly credentialed scientists and extensively in the climate blogosphere.

97 Articles Refuting The "97% Consensus"

The shoddy methodology of Cook's study has been shown to be so fatally flawed that well known climate scientists have publicly spoken out against it, "The '97% consensus' article is poorly conceived, poorly designed and poorly executed. It obscures the complexities of the climate issue and it is a sign of the desperately poor level of public and policy debate in this country [UK] that the energy minister should cite it. "- Mike Hulme, Ph.D. All "97% Consensus" Studies Refuted by Peer-Review. After showing how 97 articles thoroughly refuted the most prominent "consensus" study, Cook et al. (2013), consensus proponents inevitably moved the goal posts and fell back on other "97% consensus" studies: Doran & Zimmerman (2009), Anderegg et al. (2010) and Oreskes (2004) (which is really a 100% consensus study).

All "97% Consensus" Studies Refuted by Peer-Review

However, these have all been thoroughly refuted in the scholarly literature and the following are the refutations of them. Update: Since this article was first published additional studies have been used to perpetuate the long-debunked "97% consensus" talking point, such as Verheggen et al. (2014). While others like Stenhouse et al. (2014) actually demonstrated a marginal 52% consensus. The Letter Science Magazine Rejected (PDF) [Archive](Energy & Environment, Volume 16, Numbers 3-4, pp. 685-688, July 2005)- Benny Peiser Scientific Consensus on Climate Change? Abstract: Fear of anthropogenic "global warming" can adversely affect patients' well-being. Rebuttals to Criticisms: Wrongly Reported 97% of the Time. The Cook et al paper ‘Quantifying the consensus on anthropogenic global warming in the scientific literature’ has been the top-ranking paper in terms of press citations, with Barack Obama using it to justify his efforts in Paris to lead the world in the war on CO2.

Wrongly Reported 97% of the Time

A typical press report on the study, reproduced in full below, advises in the first paragraph that ninety-seven percent of scientists say global warming is mainly man-made and the study found an overwhelming view among scientists that “human activity, led by the use of fossil fuels”, was the main cause of rising temperatures in recent decades. That looks like strong support for action on fossil fuels, but what does the paper itself tell us? Does it tell us anything more than that there is an overwhelming consensus on a human contribution to warming? Is that exciting news? Can you find anyone among the so-called deniers who denies that there has been warming since the industrial revolution?

About that overwhelming 97-98% number of scientists that say there is a climate consensus… Larry Bell writes in his weekly Forbes column about that oft repeated but less than truthy “98% of all scientists” statistic. Supposedly, this was such an easy and quick to do survey, it was a no-brainer according to the two University of Illinois researchers who conducted it: To maximize the response rate, the survey was designed to take less than 2 minutes to complete, and it was administered by a professional online survey site ( www.questionpro.com ) that allowed one-time participation by those who received the invitation. I think it is hilarious that so few people who cite this survey as “proof” of consensus actually look into the survey and the puny response numbers involved. So, I decided to graph the data to give some much needed perspective.

Apparently, the majority of AGU members polled didn’t think this poll on climate change consensus was worth returning. – Anthony. Survey of scientists debunks global warming 'consensus' - Principia Scientific International. Published on Written by www.examiner.com The facts continue to discredit the left’s fraudulent “consensus of experts.” This time, it is in the form of a recent survey of climate scientists by George Mason University. More than four thousand American Meteorological Society (AMS) members were recently asked about their positions on global warming (or ‘climate change,’ now that we know zero actual warminghas occurred for decades). And the results predictably fly in the face of everything we have been told.

Approximately one-third acknowledged that global warming “is not occurring, is mostly natural, or is at most half-natural and half man-made … or simply think we ‘don’t know.'” 97%: An Inconvenient Truth About The Oft-Cited Polling Of Climate. Let’s Talk About The ‘97% Consensus’ On Global Warming. We’ve heard it time and time again: “97 percent of scientists agree global warming is real and man-made.”

Question one aspect of the global warming “consensus” and politicians and activists immediately whip out the figure. “You disagree with 97 percent of scientists?” The 97 percent figure was often used by the Obama administration to bolster its case for phasing out fossil fuels, and President Barack Obama himself used the figure to undercut his critics. NASA even cites studies purporting to show near-unanimous agreement on the issue. More recently, Newsweek included this figure in an article fretting about “climate deniers” in state legislatures trying to influence science curriculum.

The 52% Consensus. Science or Science Fiction? 97% climate consensus crumbles in survey. Cook’s 97% consensus study falsely classifies scientists’ papers according to the scientists that published them. UPDATE: More inconsistency: When asked about the categorizations of Cook et al, – “It would be incorrect to claim that our paper was an endorsement of CO2-induced global warming” Guest essay by Andrew of Popular Technology The paper, Cook et al. (2013) ‘Quantifying the consensus on anthropogenic global warming in the scientific literature‘ searched the Web of Science for the phrases “global warming” and “global climate change” then categorizing these results to their alleged level of endorsement of AGW.

These results were then used to allege a 97% consensus on human-caused global warming. To get to the truth, I emailed a sample of scientists whose papers were used in the study and asked them if the categorization by Cook et al. (2013) is an accurate representation of their paper. Craig D. Dr. More studies rebut climate change consensus amid government crackdown on dissent - Principia Scientific International. Published on Written by Valerie Richardson - The Washington Times The latest government crackdown on climate dissent, exemplified by last week’s subpoena of the Competitive Enterprise Institute, comes amid a surge of scientific research that pokes holes in the catastrophic climate change consensus.

Even as Virgin Islands Attorney General Claude E. Walker demanded the free market think tank’s climate research and communications, a rising tide of evidence has challenged the narrative that increased carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are driving floods, drought and other disasters. As of March 27, researchers had published 133 “consensus-skeptical” papers this year, bringing to 660 the number of such studies appearing since January 2014, blogger Kenneth Richard wrote on the skeptics website NoTricksZone. 97% Study Falsely Classifies Scientists' Papers, according to the scientists that published them. Climate Change: No, It’s Not a 97 Percent Consensus. Unable to address Texas senator Ted Cruz’s questions about “the Pause” — the apparent global-warming standstill, now almost 19 years long — at Tuesday’s meeting of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Oversight, Sierra Club president Aaron Mair, after an uncomfortable pause of his own, appealed to authority: “Ninety-seven percent of scientists concur and agree that there is global warming and anthropogenic impact,” he stated multiple times. Almost everything the media tells you about skeptics is wrong: they’re engineers and hard scientists. They like physics too.

In the mainstream media, skeptics are called Flat-Earthers, Deniers, and ideologues who deny basic physics. So it’s no surprise that they are exactly the opposite. A recent survey of 5,286 readers of leading skeptical blogs (eg here, WattsUp) shows that the people driving the skeptical debate are predominantly engineers and hard scientists with backgrounds like maths, physics and chemistry. Which group in the population are least likely to deny basic physics? Skeptics. I asked Mike Haseler for more details: around half of respondents had worked in engineering and a quarter in sciencearound 80% had degrees of which about 40% were “post graduate” qualified.Respondents were asked which areas they had formal “post-school qualification”. Furthermore, the media “debate” is nothing like the real debate. The big question this survey doesn’t answer is why no government funded groups seem to have done this obvious research long ago.

Cooks ‘97% consensus’ disproven by a new peer reviewed paper showing major math errors. UPDATE: While this paper (a rebuttal) has been accepted, another paper by Cook and Nuccitelli has been flat out rejected by the journal Earth System Dynamics. See update below. – Anthony. Cook's 97% Consensus Study Game Plan Revealed. In March of 2012, the climate alarmist website Skeptical Science had their forums "hacked" and the contents posted online. Only 53% Of Climatologists & Meteorologists, 36% Of Engineers & Geoscientists, 19% Of Agronomists Are ‘Consensus’ Believers.

Americans’ beliefs about climate change were recently surveyed by the Pew Research Center, and the results were made public a few days ago. The 97% consensus of climate scientists is only 47% Summary: In February 2014 I examined surveys of climate scientists and found (as had others) that they showed broad agreement with the IPCC’s headline statement about warming since 1950. However time brings new research, such as a major survey that digs deeper and finds that only a minority of climate scientists agree with the full key statement of AR5 about greenhouse gases — the most recent IPCC report.
