(Twitter) Protesting Wits University workers and students say it was totally unnecessary for the police to use brutal force against them. Police used stun grenades at a handful of protesters who were preventing cars from entering the main campus in Braamfontein on Wednesday. A student who was not part of the protest was arrested. The students joined the workers in their demand to be hired directly by the university. This protester says they were walking away from the gate when the police started pushing them. "While we were walking slowly, they threw a stun grenade right in the middle of the crowd, then they hit us with another stun grenade, that time people were trying to run. She adds that the police were carrying live ammunition. "It’s like they were there and intended to kill us or something, we don't understand. The university has suspended seven students from different political parties for their alleged involvement in the violent disruption of a SRC debate earlier this week. The debate was called off on Tuesday after a fight broke out between students of rival parties. The EFF was one of the parties whose members were allegedly involved in the violence. President of the EFF Students Society Mpho Morulane says, "This is clear prosecution of those who are members of the EFF student command. "We are going to attempt to meet with the Vice Chancellor and the outcomes of the engagement that we are going to have with him will determine the action that we are going to take.
