Dutch Research Institute for Transitions. Prof. Dr. ir. Jan Rotmans. Jan Rotmans (1961) is a socially engaged scientist, with more than 200 publications in the field of climate change & global change modelling, sustainable development, and transitions and system innovations.

After his PhD-research and work at RIVM he became the youngest professor of the Netherlands in 1997, at the Maastricht University (ICIS: International Centre for Integrative Studies). In September 2004 he founded the new research institute DRIFT, Dutch Research Institute For Transitions, and became full professor in transitions and transition management at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. Apart from his scientific work he also wants to contribute to a better and sustainable society. Therefore a radical change, a transition, is necessary. With his knowledge he would like to make up the rules and transmit them to the people involved in any project, region or sector, so that they can give it a swing into a more sustainable direction. Niki Frantzeskaki was born in Chania, Crete-Greece in 1980 and graduated Environmental Engineering at TU Crete (Greece) with honours in 2003. Her master studies were realized at TU Delft (The Netherlands) where she graduated a Master of Science on Engineering and Policy Analysis with honours in 2005. From 2006 until 2010, she was a PhD candidate at the TU Delft on research of transition dynamics. She graduated her PhD in November 2011 on the topic “Dynamics of transitions: Driving Forces and Feedback Loops” with TU Delft, Policy Analysis Section. Shivant Jhagroe. Rick’s work focusses on the energy transition, both in the Netherlands and abroad.

Recently, Rick advised the Economic Affairs committee of the Dutch parliament on the effects of Germany’s Energiewende and the Social Economic Council (SER) in its efforts to reach an Energy Agreement for Sustainable Growth. Next to publishing scientific work, Rick writes for popular media such as the Financieele Dagblad and European Energy Review and is a frequently invited speaker at conferences. Rick holds a Bachelor degree in Environmental Sciences and a Master degree in Renewable Energy Management from University of Freiburg (GER).

In between he spent one semester at the Australian National University to study Sustainable Energy Systems. Before starting at DRIFT, Rick gained work experience in the (renewable) energy sector at the Netherlands Embassies in Australia and Germany and with the Clingendael International Energy Programme in the Hague. Frederic studied at Leiden University, University of California at Berkeley and Universiteit van Amsterdam obtaining a BA in Literary Studies and an MA in Cultural Analysis.

Fascinated by the inherent interconnectedness of the current economic, environmental and social crises, and the difficulty of interdisciplinary cooperation, he wrote his master thesis on the meaning and the reason of the sustainability concept. He helped produce the first sustainability report of a financial institution in India, started a business in organic disposable plates and worked as a communication expert for a waste and resource management company. Her research aims to help organisations deal more effectively with sustainability challenges, an objective she established during her former career in the private sector. Professor-Whiteman combines her role at RSM with that of part time Professor in-Residence at the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). She is co-founder and Director of ERIM's Centre for Corporate Eco-Transformation , where she collaborates with multinational companies, to examine issues such as the strategic role of companies in their transition towards low carbon, sustainable cities; the impact of natural resource extraction on local sustainability; and the drivers of sustainable innovation. Willem Ferwerda (1959) studied tropical ecology and environmental science in Amsterdam and Bogotá and has a background in nonprofit as well as profit organisations.

He has worked in several (tropical) countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia on tourism, conservation and restoration of ecosystems. From 2000 to March 2012 he was director of IUCN Netherlands, the Dutch office of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the largest international union of nature organizations, states and scientists. Under the Ecosystem Grants Programme, IUCN NL financed more than 1,500 local projects in 40 tropical countries. Under Ferwerda IUCN NL put biodiversity on the agendas of business and government in The Netherlands, strengthened the Dutch nature conservation network and introduced the UN study ‘The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity’’ (TEEB) to the business community in the Netherlands.

James Everett Hein is an Assistant Professor in Political Communication in the Department of Media and Communication at Erasmus University Rotterdam. His empirical research examines: U.S. corporate elites and climate change policy, movement-countermovement frame strategies in the climate change policy conflict, sociopolitical factors that impact movement frame deployment, and the process by which social problems emerge onto agendas. Currently, he is writing a series of articles and a book from his dissertation “Movement-Countermovement Dynamics in the Global Warming Policy Conflict.” He is also in the early stages of cross-national research that examines rhetoric used by oppositional movements in local-level efforts to address climate change through sustainability initiatives.
