ICDL - International Children's Digital Library Response Journal What is a Response Journal? Response journals require the students to write about what they felt while reading a book or listening to a story. What is its purpose? Response Journals record student feelings, responses, and reactions to reading texts. This strategy encourages students to think deeply about the materials they read and to relate this information to their prior knowledge and experiences. This interaction between reader and text extends the reading experience into the "real life" application of information. Response Journals allow students to reflect on and raise questions about a text. How can I do it? Explain the functions of the response journal to students. Assessment and Evaluation Considerations The response journal may be viewed as a piece of ongoing assessment. As part of self-evaluation, students may choose a piece of writing from their reading response journals they would like to include in their portfolio and explain what it shows they can do well or might do better.

Road to Reading PowerPoint Word Wall Vocabulary Presentations The presentations listed above are zipped files. You must have WinZip installed on your computer in order to open these presentations. Words and Technology The goal of working with words is to provide children opportunities spelling and reading words through activities that build phonemic awareness and application of phonetic skills. Since the manipulation of letters is so important in the Words Block, technology can provide the teacher the materials and resources that can be downloaded to their classroom computer. Multimedia vocabulary cards can be created through PowerPoint or Hyperstudio. The teacher could record a sound file by reading the word and a sentence with the word that is then inserted in the appropriate slide. The activities in the working with words section allow a teacher to observe, teach, mentor, and evaluate children in spelling and reading words in a manner that is both timely and efficient. Why Every Entrepreneur Should Self-Publish a Book I’ve published eight books in the past seven years, five with traditional publishers (Wiley, Penguin, HarperCollins), one comic book, and the last two I’ve self-published. In this post I give the specific details of all of my sales numbers and advances with the traditional publishers. Although the jury is still out on my self-published books, “How to be the Luckiest Man Alive” and “I Was Blind But Now I See” I can tell you these two have already sold more than my five books with traditional publishers, combined. If you, the entrepreneur, self-publish a book you will stand out, you will make more money, you will kick your competitors right in the XX, and you will look amazingly cool at cocktail parties. I know this because I am seldom cool but at cocktail parties, with my very own comic book, I can basically have sex with anyone in the room. A) Advances are going to zero. B) Lag time. C) Marketing. Here’s what’s so funny. E) More control over content and design. Now, 1. 2. E) Kindle. 1.
