Webinars The NASSP Policy & Advocacy Center’s “State of American Education” session, originally slated for the 2020 National Principals Conference in July, goes virtual for the first time—as a FREE event! With the effects of COVID-19 felt throughout the nation, we will look at how the pandemic has impacted schools and related issues such as social and emotional learning; trauma-informed care; continued remote learning; grading, assessments, and accountability; and educator shortages. Principals and administrators will have the opportunity to hear from a diverse panel of thought leaders in education who will share how this experience may change the education landscape in the future. Additionally, part of the discussion will focus on racial equity in light of the protests this summer and what impact that may have on schools.

I have used these routines with students, as blogging routines and in professional development workshops. The Visible Thinking Routines website explains that: Routines exist in all classrooms; they are the patterns by which we operate and go about the job of learning and working together in a classroom environment. A routine can be thought of as any procedure, process, or pattern of action that is used repeatedly to manage and facilitate the accomplishment of specific goals or tasks.[…] Classrooms also have routines that structure the way students go about the process of learning As I am trying to make 21st century, modern, contemporary or “now” learning visible, it seemed a natural step to point out “Modern” or “Now” Learning Routines.

Varied wall and floor surface textures and built-in navigational aids - such as trail rails, varied ceiling heights, and the print, Braille, moon and graphical signage - help children to navigate around the building independently. The main school building is a single-storey “s” shape structure that reduces the perceived scale of the school and makes it less intimidating and more welcoming to small children. M.C. Escher's tessellations have a way of grabbing your attention and forcing your mind to make sense of the impossible figures on the paper. The Merriam dictionary describes tessellations as, "a covering of an infinite geometric plane without gaps or overlaps by congruent plane figures of one type or a few types." A geometry book I have on hand describes tessellations as geometric forms that make use of all available foreground and background space in two dimensions by repeating one or more different shapes in predictable patterns. To tessellate a single shape it must be able to exactly surround a point, or in other words, the sum of the angles around each point in a tessellation must be 360.
