I'm one of those people who was cursed with stick straight thin hair that hates to curl. I used to do the traditional "braid your hair before bed" and rag curling tricks to get nice beachy waves, but they never ended up turning out right the next day. I didn't like the fact that the process took a whole night, and I had no way of knowing what my hair was going to look like when I pulled the braids/rags out. Do you know how nerve-wracking that is, especially if you have an event to go to (*cough* my brother's wedding)? Would the curls be too tight? would they end up in funny places?

I won’t easily forget my first dry shampoo recipe or homemade waterless shampoo, whatever you would like to call it. Picture this: Summer of 199Something, backpacking through Europe. Almost at the end of my trip my shampoo is finished, as is my money (well almost, but I chose bread over shampoo… am I weird now?) I’m wearing a baseball cap most of the time to hide my hair and bumming shampoo from fellow travelers whenever I can At some point it must have been so bad that the landlady of the small French hostel I’m staying in, grabs me by the arm and drags me into her small kitchen. In her most motherly voice she tries to explain about personal hygiene (I assume; was too embarrassed to really pay attention) and finally that you can clean your hair with THIS...she pushes a glass jar in my hands filled with an undefined powder.
