While few of the scientific offerings formally follow the scientific method or test an explicitly stated hypothesis, even those videos veering more towards demonstrating various principles, theories, and laws still offer visitors a chance to learn something about how the world around them operates. By this point, it should go without saying that many of the following videos contain procedures that may be dangerous to perform at home or without the proper equipment and/or training. Please do not duplicate any of these experiments unless assured that they are entirely safe for amateurs.
Edutech for Teachers » Tech Tip of the Week Gooru: Science & Math Resources February7 Resource: Gooru is new service whose mission is to provide teachers and students with a variety of multimedia resources – videos, diagrams, interactive displays, documents and quizzes – related to 5th–12th grade science and math topics. Matt Vaudrey For students to become self-directed learners and constructive members of society, they should direct their own behavior to impact their circumstance. Instead of teachers yelling and nagging, music cues can direct the student action. Instead of micro-managing (“Damien, take out your notebook.”), we’re helping students direct themselves and manage their own time. This develops a sense of confidence, especially among students with special needs, who will thrive under this structure. Now, instead of the teacher shepherding all the students to get their notes/pencil/highlighter ready, the teacher leads a group of internally-motivated students toward a common goal. A trail guide, not a shepherd.
Matter: Definition and Overview What is matter? Matter is everything around you. Atoms and compounds are all made of very small parts of matter. Those atoms go on to build the things you see and touch every day. Matter is defined as anything that has mass and takes up space (it has volume). Muzzy Lane - MiddWorld Online Muzzy Lane is partnering with Middlebury Interactive Languages (MIL) to create an innovative 3D language learning role-play game as part of MIL's online world language courses. The MIL courses will adapt the highly successful full-immersion formula modeled on the Middlebury College Language Schools for online delivery. Initially, Muzzy Lane will produce versions of the game to support French and Spanish languages, and each version will include a rich 3D environment specific to that culture. Students will interact with computer characters and each other in the plaza of a small French (or Spanish) city, and will be able to exercise their language skills in a variety of real-life situations and interesting game challenges. Students will collaborate with others to obtain and share clues to complete quests and advance in the game, all while reinforcing their developing foreign language knowledge.
Synthetic Biology Synthetic biology is perhaps the most accelerating science. In fact, since biology became an information technology, for the past several years synthetic biology has been developing even faster than Moore's Law. And just one example - paralel to the pioneering days of computer science, is the explosion in DIY biology garage-based hacker labs. There is a large and rapidly growing number of relevant YouTube videos. About - Features Seamlessly integrating VoiceThread into your Learning Management System (LMS) is the key to user happiness. VoiceThread works well within a broad range of systems, but the most powerful option is the standard developed by the IMS Global Learning Consortium called Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI). LTI allows VoiceThread to integrate into most major Learning Management Systems, including but not limited to Blackboard, Sakai, Angel, Canvas, Desire2Learn, BrainHoney and Moodle. Single Sign-onAll users access VoiceThread with a single click. Through LTI, VoiceThread will know the context of the user from the LMS, and an account will be created for that person.
Designing Shifts-Aligned Interventions in the Math Classroom As teachers, we want to help all kids learn and when we’re faced with the realization that some students just aren’t “getting it,” we work to figure out how to catch kids up. It’s a prevalent struggle many educators grapple with and a frequent conversation in schools: How do we address unfinished learning in math and fill gaps in student understanding? Over the course of my career I have seen, all too often, students behind grade level denied access to grade-level mathematics, in an effort to catch them up or “fill the holes.” All students deserve access to content-rich instruction at their grade level, and when students have unfinished learning from previous grades, teachers need to take appropriate action—and that doesn’t mean reverting solely to materials and content from previous grades. So, how do we address unfinished learning and support students in developing understanding and mastery of content? Recommendations for Targeted Math and Intervention
