As militarized police in riot gear and armored vehicles barreled into peaceful protesters in cities across America, and its president emerged from a bunker to have citizens tear-gassed on his way to a church he’d never attended, holding a Bible he’d never read, many people recalled a famous saying often misattributed to Sinclair Lewis’s 1935 novel It Can’t Happen Here: “When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.”

American Fascism: It Has Happened Here

Because Lewis’s novel is the best remembered of the many warnings against American fascism in the interwar years, he has latterly been credited with the admonition, but they are not Lewis’s words. The adage probably originated instead with James Waterman Wise, son of the eminent American rabbi Stephen Wise and one of the many voices at the time urging Americans to recognize fascism as a serious domestic threat. “The America of power and wealth,” Wise cautioned, is “an America which needs fascism.” At the same time, in 1935, W.E.B. When Senator Joe McCarthy Defended Nazis

That was Adolf Hitler’s standing order to his elite Waffen-SS as the Wehrmacht sought to break the Allies’ tightening grip in late 1944 by crashing through enemy lines in an audacious counteroffensive that would become known as the Battle of the Bulge. The Führer’s edict was enforced in the ice-encrusted fields outside the Belgian city of Malmedy. On the afternoon of December 17, a battle group of the armored First SS Panzer Division ambushed a band of lightly armed U.S. troops. The overwhelmed American GIs’ only option was to raise white flags. The Nazis accepted their surrender and assembled the American prisoners. The stories of those murdered prisoners of war might never have been told, but 50 Americans played dead or overcame their wounds and later recounted the fate of their executed compatriots. The Allies saw Malmedy as a metaphor for Nazi heinousness and American justice.

Deductive Reasoning vs. Inductive Reasoning

Another type of reasoning, inductive, is also used. Often, people confuse deductive reasoning with inductive reasoning, and vice versa. It is important to learn the meaning of each type of reasoning so that proper logic can be identified. Prof Stephen Hawking's multiverse finale. Prof Stephen Hawking's multiverse finale

The theory resolves a cosmic paradox of the late physicist's own making. It also points a way forward for astronomers to find evidence of the existence of parallel universes. In the 1980s, the Cambridge scientist, along with US physicist James Hartle developed a new idea about the beginning of the Universe. This resolved a difficulty with Einstein's theory that suggested that the Universe began nearly 14 billion years ago but said nothing about how it began. Instead, the Hartle-Hawking idea used a different theory called quantum mechanics to explain how the Universe arose from nothingness.

The idea tied up one loose end but created another - an infinite number some might say. As physicists analysed the idea it emerged that it carried with it the implication that the Big Bang would create not just one universe - but an endless supply. 5 Reasons We May Live in a Multiverse. The universe we live in may not be the only one out there.

5 Reasons We May Live in a Multiverse

In fact, our universe could be just one of an infinite number of universes making up a "multiverse. " Though the concept may stretch credulity, there's good physics behind it. And there's not just one way to get to a multiverse — numerous physics theories independently point to such a conclusion. In fact, some experts think the existence of hidden universes is more likely than not. Here are the five most plausible scientific theories suggesting we live in a multiverse: 1. Scientists can't be sure what the shape of space-time is, but most likely, it's flat (as opposed to spherical or even donut-shape) and stretches out infinitely.

What to Read This Summer: 'Hex,' 'Catherine House,' and More

A modern reworking of King Lear, the novel hinges on a farmer’s decision to pass his land to his three daughters. As in the play, a disagreement between the patriarch and his favorite daughter causes the family (and the father’s mental acuity) to unravel. Smiley’s take explores the cultural and political shifts that ripped through Middle America in the 1960s and ’70s. 30 Singular Films to Watch in Quarantine. After a late-night encounter with a rodent stuck in his trash can, Anthony finds himself exploring Baltimore’s history of rat infestations, which ties into housing segregation, redlining, urban neglect, and the city’s long-lasting problems with systemic racism. Incorporating the perspectives of city officials, community activists, and neighbors, Anthony turns a nonfiction project into a portrait of the home he loves, full of praise and regret.

Is it a good thing or a bad thing? It depends on how you look at it. It's great that the butt indent on our couches is getting a relief, but then again, people overcrowding places like Ikea is the downside. They probably all rushed there to replace their sofas. Queens of Infamy. A Simple Guide to Detecting Screenwriting Contest Scams. How do you know if a screenwriting contest, film festival, competition, or fellowship is legit, a scam, or something in between? This is a common question that we get from new writers. With hundreds of contests out there, you’d be surprised to know that most of them are not the scams cynical screenwriters make them out to be — most of them are just wastes of time. A contest probably isn’t a complete scam if its website lists answers to at least these 3 questions: 1. Who founded and/or runs the contest?

As a swimmer, I've always felt at home in the ocean. But Phuket, a place I've visited more than a dozen times since childhood, is where I find stillness. The ocean laps calmly, and when you close your eyes to feel the salty breeze, you can hear the rustling of tropical forests right off the coast. Vendors sell just-cracked coconuts sloshing over with fresh juice.
