About Us - Rachel's Challenge. It doesn’t have to be this way.
Creating a school climate less susceptible to harassment, bullying and violence is possible. We see it happening in socioeconomically and demographically diverse schools across North America every day. For us it started when Rachel Joy Scott was the first person killed in the Columbine High School shooting on April 20, 1999. But that was only the beginning of the story. After her death, many students that Rachel reached out to shared stories with the Scotts about the profound impact her simple acts of kindness had on their lives; even preventing one young man for taking his own life.
In the nineteen years since we lost twelve innocent lives, including Rachel, her legacy has touched 25 million people and is the foundation for creating programs that promote a positive climate in K-12 schools. Rachel's Challenge programs provide a sustainable, evidence-based framework for positive climate and culture in our schools. How a 7-year-old in Syria became this generation’s Anne Frank. Last September, a 7-year-old Syrian girl, Bana Alabed, weary from war and frustrated that no one else in the world seemed to care, took to Twitter to write a simple plea: “I need peace.”
Later that night, in the simple but evocative language of a child, she wrote: “I can’t go out because of the bombing please stop bombing us.” With those tweets, Bana, who learned English from her mother, Fatemah, became the young face of the Syrian civil war. A modern-day Anne Frank, the child offered an unadulterated view into the horrors of life on the ground in Aleppo. With so few journalists allowed to access the city, her tweets not only evoked sympathy worldwide; they also filled an important journalistic void, shaming Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad and serving as a daily reminder to the global community of the atrocities that civilians, including children, were subjected to daily while the fighting raged around them. Zlata Filipovic, whose journal was Sarajevo's answer to Anne Frank's diary, tells of her fears for Bosnia today. But unfortunately for her, the life she relates in her diary is more often compared to that of Anne Frank, trapped in Amsterdam during the Nazi occupation.
