Photo courtesy of GreenWave Reality I had a classic facepalm moment recently. I was boarding a plane for a five-day vacation and realized that, in my rush to get to the airport, I had forgotten to turn out the lights in the entryway of my house. But moments later (after screaming “Duh!”) I sighed with relief. This is the joy of home automation. The bulbs use energy-efficient LEDs for illumination, but they’re also each armed with an internet-enabled chip, allowing them to be controlled wirelessly. The light bulbs I tested in my home are made by GreenWave Reality, a company with offices in Denmark, southern California and Singapore. The basic $200 GreenWave kit I tested includes four 40-watt-equivalent LED bulbs, the remote control, and a small internet gateway that connects via an Ethernet cable to your Wi-Fi router.
When you insert each bulb, it fades up and down, and the app’s setup wizard finds its location. The iPad app. Smart bulbs: how many features does it take to screw in an LED light bulb? Thomas Edison reportedly tried 3,000 different ideas for the light bulb before he found one that would sell.
Over a century later, his winning formula is rapidly falling out of favor. Much of the world has decided to ban inefficient incandescent light bulbs, or at least drive them out of the market using minimum efficiency standards. When existing bulbs burn out, consumers will have to choose between halogen, CFL, or LED alternatives. In many ways, LEDs seem like the best bet: they're generally more efficient, last longer, turn on faster, fit more places, and produce better quality of light than their fluorescent counterparts. One tiny problem: While you can find nice, bright incandescents as cheap as $0.25 per bulb at your local hardware store, and CFLs around $1.25 a pop, LED light bulbs currently start at around $20 each for a 60-watt equivalent. Ouch. But what if you got more for your money than a globe that simply lights up?
GreenWave Reality Wi-Fi enabled LED light bulb kit now shipping. Greenwave Reality has released a Wi-Fi controlled LED lighting kit that aims to give users complete control over their light sources while at home and away.
It’s not the first Wi-Fi bulb we’ve come across but it is one of the first available to purchase, albeit only through distribution and utility partners early on. The kit, called the Connected Lighting Solution, includes four LED light bulbs, a remote control and a gateway box that links to your home router. Each LED bulb is equivalent to a standard 40-watt bulb, according to Greenwave CEO Greg Memo, but requires a fraction of the energy to equal the light output.
The kit is described as extremely simple to set up. Each bulb has its own IP address and is paired with the gateway box from the get-go. Unfortunately you might have to wait a while before getting your hands on this technology. Expect to pay around $200 for the starter kit which includes the aforementioned four LED bulbs, a remote control and a gateway box. RGB LinkUp Wifi LED Light Bulb. Philips Dimmable LED Lightning Review: So Much Light, So Little Juice. Philips Hue LED bulbs review. LED bulbs seem to be the future of home lighting: They save electricity, they're durable and they don't contain mercury like compact fluorescents.
But having them produce white light like any old light bulb is like using a computer as a doorstop. That's because each LED, or light-emitting diode, is a small chip, the product of the same sort of manufacturing process that spawned the digital revolution. The chips are backed up by more electronics in the stem of the bulb. These bulbs are smart, or at least they can be if we make them that way. Image copyright Philips I bit the bullet and bought a Philips Hue connected LED light starter pack back in November of last year. At the time, with a ton of favorable buzz and availability exclusively through Apple (you can now buy Hue gear through Amazon), the bulbs were in short supply. Online lead times quickly stretched into the two month range. My local Apple Store had two kits on the shelf, so I hustled down, pushed through the people standing in line for the iPad Mini launch and snagged a starter pack. There are three big technology trends that are converging in the home right now: Connected appliances, smartphone/tablet apps and energy conservation.
The packaging of the Hue starter kit is reminiscent of something Apple would have put together — clearly a lot of thought went into the box (complete with colour wheel).
