When science meets sartorial: the skirt and shoe made from kombucha. India. Quantitative comparison between crowd models for evacuation planning and evaluation. Crowd simulation is rapidly becoming a standard tool for evacuation planning and evaluation.
However, the many crowd models in the literature are structurally different, and few have been rigorously calibrated against real-world egress data, especially in emergency situations. In this paper we describe a procedure to quantitatively compare different crowd models or between models and real-world data. We simulated three models: (1) the lattice gas model, (2) the social force model, and (3) the RVO2 model, and obtained the distributions of six observables: (1) evacuation time, (2) zoned evacuation time, (3) passage density, (4) total distance traveled, (5) inconvenience, and (6) flow rate. New application of physics tools used in biology. A Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory physicist and his colleagues have found a new application for the tools and mathematics typically used in physics to help solve problems in biology.
Specifically, the team used statistical mechanics and mathematical modeling to shed light on something known as epigenetic memory—how an organism can create a biological memory of some variable condition, such as quality of nutrition or temperature. "The work highlights the interdisciplinary nature of modern molecular biology, in particular, how the tools and models from mathematics and physics can help clarify problems in biology," said Ken Kim, an LLNL physicist and one of the authors of a paper appearing in the Feb. 7 issue of Physical Review Letters. Not all characteristics of living organisms can be explained by their genes alone.
Epigenetic processes react with great sensitivity to genes' immediate biochemical surroundings—and further, they pass those reactions on to the next generation. Bottom-up insight into crowd dynamics. Stampedes unfortunately occur on too regular a basis.
Previously, physicists developed numerous models of crowd evacuation dynamics. Their analyses focused on disasters such as the yearly Muslim Hajj or of the Love Parade disaster in Germany in 2010. Unfortunately, the casualties at these events may have been linked to the limitations of the crowd dynamics models used at the time. Proteins snap those wrinkly fingers back into shape.
You know how your fingers wrinkle up in the bath?
The outer layer of your skin absorbs water and swells up, forming ridges – but quickly returns to its old state when dry. Two physicists, Professor Roland Roth of Tübingen University and Dr. Myfanwy Evans at Erlangen University have shown just why skin has this remarkable ability. Their conclusions were published recently in the journal Physical Review Letters.

People with ovarian cancer who receive high-dose vitamin C injections are less likely to report toxic side effects from chemotherapy than people who had chemotherapy alone, according to the results of a small clinical trial. The study, published today in Science Translational Medicine1, was too small to assess whether the combination of chemotherapy and vitamin C combats cancer better than chemotherapy alone.
Trick of the light. Budding biologists learn early the apparently simple holy trinity of ingredients for photosynthesis: carbon dioxide, water and light.
In truth, the equation is a little more complicated than that, and when photosynthesis proceeds on a truly massive scale, these complications can have huge implications. Take, for example, the world’s largest mass of concentrated photosynthesis: the Amazon rainforest of South America. A new era for atomic clocks. A revolution is under way in timekeeping.
Precision timekeeping based on atomic clocks already underpins much of our modern technology—telecommunications, computer networks and satellite-based positioning systems like GPS that are used by billions of people every day. But now research at NIST, JILA and other organizations throughout the world is improving atomic clock performance so quickly that many new applications are expected in the near future. Cancer cells become less aggressive in space. Studies on the impacts of space exploration on the human body haven’t always been good news.
Not only does microgravity cause certain microbes to become virulent, but there are known negative effects on the body: from bone loss to weakened heart muscle to eye abnormalities. Just this week, an international team of researchers revealed how some tumors that are aggressive on earth are considerably less aggressive in microgravity. Understanding what inhibits cancer growth in space could help researchers develop treatments that accomplish the same thing on Earth. To better understand the genetic and cellular processes that occur in space, a team led by Daniela Gabriele Grimm of Aarhus University in Denmark focused on the effects on cancer cells of both short-term, simulated microgravity with as well as long-term, real microgravity: Cancer cells become less aggressive in space. Seeds of doubt - 31 January 2014. The effect of GM crops on food, agriculture and farmers continues to be highly controversial, polarising scientists and policy-makers alike.
Darryl D'Monte outlines some of the recent turns in the debate to show that the truth, perhaps, lies somewhere in between. 31 January 2014 - Far from coming to an end, the controversy over whether genetically modified (GM) crops are a boon or bane seems to be getting more polarized. In this country, the two crops which are at the centre of the debate are GM cotton, which has been permitted by the central government since 2002, and brinjal. Indeed, India is now the focus of the global discourse on the pros and cons of GM crops, after the widespread introduction of such cotton. Toxicity of cottonseed as cattlefeed. If you have an interest in health care and computer technology and are looking for a people-oriented profession in an expanding job market, consider a career in nuclear medicine technology. The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that employment of nuclear medicine technologists will increase by 16 percent from 2008 to 2018. Vol 41, Iss 2, Pgs 133-216, (February, 2014) Nuclear Medicine Concerns. The amount of radiation from diagnostic nuclear medicine procedures is kept within a safe limit and follows the "ALARA" (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle. The radiation dose from nuclear medicine imaging varies greatly depending on the type of study. The effective radiation dose can be lower than or comparable to the annual background radiation dose. It can also be in the range or higher than the radiation dose from an abdomen/pelvis CT scan nuclear medicine procedures require special patient preparation, before the study, to obtain the most accurate result.
Pre-imaging preparations may include dietary preparation or withholding of certain medications. Patients are encouraged to consult with the nuclear medicine department prior to a scan. Nuclear medicine therapy In nuclear medicine therapy, the radiation treatment dose is also administered internally (e.g. intravenous or oral routes) rather from an external radiation source. Biotechnology Research in an Age of Terrorism - Committee on Research Standards and Practices to Prevent the Destructive Application of Biotechnology, Development, Security, and Cooperation, Policy and Global Affairs, National Research Council. In recent years much has happened to justify an examination of biological research in light of national security concerns.
The destructive application of biotechnology research includes activities such as spreading common pathogens or transforming them into even more lethal forms. Policymakers and the scientific community at large must put forth a vigorous and immediate response to this challenge. This new book by the National Research Council recommends that the government expand existing regulations and rely on self-governance by scientists rather than adopt intrusive new policies. One key recommendation of the report is that the government should not attempt to regulate scientific publishing but should trust scientists and journals to screen their papers for security risks, a task some journals have already taken up. With biological information and tools widely distributed, regulating only U.S. researchers would have little effect. Radiation-Induced Bioradicals. This chapter is part one of a review in which the production and application of radiation-induced bioradicals is discussed.
Bioradicals play a pivotal role in the complex chain of processes starting with the absorption of radiation in biological materials and ending with the radiation-induced biological after-effects. The general aspects of the four consecutive stages (physical, physicochemical, chemical and biological) are discussed from an interdisciplinary point of view. The close relationship between radiation dose and track structure, induced DNA damage and cell survival or killing is treated in detail. The repair mechanisms that cells employ, to insure DNA stability following irradiation, are described. Physics and Chemistry Basis of Biotechnology. The recent advances in the field of Biotechnology cannot simply be ascribed to one scientific discipline. Cobalt catalysts allow researchers to duplicate the complicated steps of photosynthesis.
