Canadian town first to pledge net-zero emissions by 2030. A Christmas holiday in 2011 saw days without power in Halton Hills, Ont., caused by brutal ice storms.

Three-quarters of people in the world’s wealthiest nations believe humanity is pushing the planet towards a dangerous tipping point and support a shift of priorities away from economic profit, according to a global survey.
The Ipsos Mori survey for the Global Commons Alliance (GCA) also found a majority (58%) were very concerned or extremely concerned about the state of the planet. Four in five respondents said they were willing to step up and do more to regenerate the global commons. The lead author of the report, Owen Gaffney of the GCA, said the results showed strong global support for urgent, decisive action on the climate and nature crises.

London’s leafy streets and gardens have long been prized for their beauty — and more recently their ability to counteract carbon emissions and improve air quality.
But the value of urban trees can also be measured with money. A new report from Britain’s Office of National Statistics estimates tree cover saved the capital more than 5 billion pounds ($6.56 billion) from 2014 to 2018 through air cooling alone. Additionally, by keeping summer temperatures bearable for workers, trees prevented productivity losses of almost 11 billion pounds.
The estimates underline just how vital the role trees play is in making cities comfortable and functional in a warming world — particularly in London. An unusually long, hot summer in 2018 pushed cost savings estimates to their highest level to date. The Weather Network - A glimpse at a dire future for the Great Lakes. In a warming world, the Great Lakes face a dire future, and with them, the millions of people, including 10 million Canadians, that live near them and rely on them for their livelihoods.
Everything including ice loss, erratic and more severe precipitation, declining water quality, and economic and infrastructure disruption are all in the cards unless climate change and other harmful human activity can be brought to heel, according to a new report released by the U.S. -based Environmental Law and Policy Center earlier this month. “We should not and cannot take the vast natural resources of the Great Lakes for granted. Allowing the Great Lakes to be degraded through human activities, including climate change, is not an option,” the report’s executive summary reads. Image: NASA Earth Observatory. The lakes have already experienced numerous changes as average global temperatures have risen about one degree celsius over the last century -- with warming accelerating over the past decades.

City trying to burn off less gas from all your garbage. The City of Ottawa has managed to dramatically reduce the greenhouse gases emitted from garbage at the Trail Road landfill in recent years, but it's still finding it a challenge to eliminate those emissions entirely.
Garbage gives off gases as it decomposes, roughly half methane and half carbon dioxide, explained Marilyn Journeaux, director of solid waste at the city. The city has drilled more than 100 wells into the garbage to vacuum out those gases so they can be converted to electricity or flared off, said Journeaux. As the garbage level increases, the city spends half a million dollars each year on drilling more wells and other infrastructure. Our preference is obviously to generate electricity with the gas- Marilyn Journeaux , solid waste manager. Boris Jones - "The first of its kind, this device measures...
