Why I believe that Five Iron Frenzy is the greatest band of all time. « kevin in training. Ah, the hope of the resurrection!
Five Iron Frenzy is back, and played their first reunited show this weekend. So I had this on my list of blog ideas, and decided this as a good time to go with it. I realize that to some people, telling a story about how a ska band deeply influenced my life and faith in deep ways sounds goofy. It sounds goofy to me too. But most things are, if you think about them.
So sit back, and let me start with a story: The year was 1997. The OTHER important thing about 1997. Should a clutch of Soundcloud demos be judged alongside a 3xLP pack? Are leaks off-limits – and, if so, why? Faced with navigating this increasingly complicated landscape, plenty of blogs have gone down the Grammys route of hyper-specification – Best Hip-Hop Albums That Aren’t Mixtapes; Best Albums Under 15 Minutes That Aren’t Singles; Best Albums With A 16×16 Floor Tom; Best Albums That Didn’t Feature Nile Rodgers. More so than any previous FACT list, this year’s Top 50 is a patchwork – a mix of official LP releases, Bandcamp freebies, cassettes, DatPiff drops and bootlegs. 50. Listen here 49. Listen here 48. Our recent story about Jimmy Page's five best guitar solos as a member of the Yardbirds got us thinking about another legendary pre-Led Zeppelin recording featuring Page. This project, however, features all four members of Led Zeppelin — Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham — recording together before there even was a Led Zeppelin. Page and Jones were successful session musicians at this point, and when Jones got the Proby gig, he invited his fellow New Yardbirds along.
