We all know the classic young girl turning into an old lady portrait, or sets of geometric figures that turn out to be of a different size than it appeared. Optical illusions are images that differ from the objective reality. But how do they work? Basically, it’s our minds trying to find the easiest way to look at things. At a first glance, we try to relate the image with the most basic and close interpretation of it, and only after a few seconds do we realize that separate details of the image don’t even make sense. Melted Crayon Art Experiment. This melted crayon art experiment was inspired from my Pinterest board where I store my craft inspiration.
It’s one of my favorite boards, and I’ve been slowly starting to actually do some of the projects I’ve stored there. The stuff on Pinterest looks all pretty, perfect, clean, and professional, and sometimes you have to wonder if the technique really works. (I’ve seen entire blogs based on disproving “pinterest techniques” or “Pin fails”.) I set out to either prove or disprove this particularly odd way of creating wall art. I saw several pictures like this one above that were made from melting crayons onto a canvas.
I liked the “rain” idea of the picture I saw on Pinterest, but since it’s now fall, and it seemed easier to find the right color of crayon in our “crayon stash” I decided to go with an autumn theme. Luckily for us, discriminating collectors appreciate the unique surfaces that signify a work is an original. That’s the main reason why I like to give my paintings a lot of texture: so everyone can immediately see that they’re originals. The following paragraphs explain my three-step process for adding unbelievable texture to any acrylic painting. There’s only one secret—the texture comes first. Creating the texture After drawing out a basic sketch of flowers on my canvas, I mixed together equal amounts of acrylic heavy gel and acrylic modeling paste. Painting over the texture After drying for about two hours my textured flowers were ready to paint. I like to paint quickly, use really vivid colors for my poppies, such as Cadmium Yellow Deep, Cadmium Orange, and Napthol Red, with deeper tones of Bordeaux Red and Violet for the shadowed areas.
