The Best of Brown Eyed Baker in 2014: 20 of My Favorite Recipes Yesterday, I shared my annual roundup of the 10 most popular recipes on Brown Eyed Baker that were made during 2014. While many of those on that list were my favorites, there were also a ton of recipes that I fell in love with this year that didn’t make the cut. I want to share my personal favorites with you that weren’t on the previous list, so I put together this follow-up roundup, which features 20 of my favorites from 2014 – 10 sweet and 10 savory.
Silent Light - Classroom Timer and Decibel Meter Educator Review How Can Teachers Use It? While Silent Light works best when used with the whole class, it still has multiple uses within the classroom. For example, while working with one group of students, you may opt to use it to keep another group of students on task. Mark Hyman, MD: Three Hidden Ways Wheat Makes You Fat Gluten-free is hot these days. There are books and websites, restaurants with gluten free menus, and grocery stores with hundreds of new gluten-free food products on the shelf. Is this a fad, or a reflection of response to a real problem? Yes, gluten is a real problem. But the problem is not just gluten. In fact, there are three major hidden reasons that wheat products, not just gluten (along with sugar in all its forms) is a major contributor to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, dementia, depression and so many other modern ills.
Gourmet Sandwiches From the molten yolk and bacon crunch of a hand-held breakfast, to the gooey charm of grilled cheese for lunch, nothing matches the simple pleasures of well-made sandwiches. They're quick to assemble, infinitely adaptable, easy to eat, and immediately satisfying—the very definition of good food. The 25 sandwiches you're about to meet can be thrown together during the average basketball halftime or, with practice, during the seventh-inning stretch. (Who needs hot dogs, anyway?) Use each recipe as a basic road map, but bring your talent for finding creative routes.
The Best of Brown Eyed Baker in 2014: The 10 Most Popular Recipes As 2014 winds to a close, it’s time for the annual roundup of the most popular recipes that were posted during the year. It wouldn’t be an end-of-year celebration without it! As usual, there were a variety of treats that made the list, and this was the very first year that there were more savory recipes on the list than sweet ones. I always look forward to putting this list together and uncovering which of the recipes were among the reader favorites for the year. So much fun! Enjoy the little trip down the foodie memory lane; perhaps you’ll even uncover a recipe you missed or forgot about it!
Milk Jug Skeleton Last weekend, I dropped my daughter off at a Girl Scout meeting and spied this awesome milk jug skeleton on the front porch of her troop leader’s house (pictured above – thanks, Kate!). It was adorable, and something that seemed like it would be a fun, long-lasting project to make with my kids. I came home and did some searching and found a few versions online. This tutorial from The Party Animal, which includes pattern pieces, seemed to be one of the best versions I found. David Katz, M.D.: A Matter of Minutes There has been a steady and resonant drumbeat of news lately, rapping out the profound health benefits of even modest physical activity. I think we can, and should, all pick our preferred drummer, and find a way to march to it. Among the more noteworthy news items was a Lancet paper some weeks ago indicating that physical inactivity now ranks as one of the top causes of premature death globally. We have long known it made the short list here in the U.S., but a marquee role in worldwide mortality was an eye-opening revelation. We also had recent research telling us that sitting too much was killing us, and just getting up and off our backsides routinely could serve as an antidote. More specifically, an article in the British Medical Journal indicated that reducing daily time on our tushes to less than three hours could add two years, on average, to our life expectancies.
Rose Apple Tart I love pie. Love it. LOVE it. For flavor, it can't be beat, in my opinion. No finer dessert around. But even I have to admit it has a more humble, rustic appearance than a fancy cake.
