Engineer Your World: Engineering Design and Problem Solving for High Schools BackgroundEngineering design is not simply a useful tool for teaching science and mathematics content, but it is also a unique discipline in which science and mathematics are employed as tools for solving design challenges. With generous support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and in partnership with national organizations including NASA, the UTeachEngineering program at the University of Texas, Austin, has undertaken to demonstrate how rigorous engineering content can be deployed in secondary classrooms. Together, we have developed, piloted, refined, and deployed a year-long high school engineering course built on a foundation of solid research in the learning sciences, couched in the context of a rigorous engineering design process, and scaffolded to build engineering skills and habits of mind. We have also tested a variety of teacher preparation and support models that continue to evolve in response to the needs of our diverse teacher population.
Integrated Design Engineering Activity Series IDEAS Engineering in the Middle School Classroom! IDEAS is the result of a project funded by The Engineering Foundation and organized by two of the worlds major engineering societies, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). How to Insert Videos Into Google Forms Not less than ten minutes after I completed my guide to Creating and Grading Quizzes With Google Forms Google released a major update to Google Forms. There were actually four new features added to Google Forms this afternoon. The best new feature is that you can now create Google Forms that include videos. The other updates include data verification which allows you to require people to prove that they're human before submitting a form, an option to display a custom message when you stop accepting form responses, and a progress meter for people to view as they complete your form. I've included directions for these new features in the screenshots below.

Hidden costs of state schools causing hardship for millions, says report Millions of families are struggling with the hidden costs of sending children to state school, with many forced to take out loans or scrimp on food and heating to pay for basics such as dinners, uniforms, course materials and trips. Parents face average annual bills of £800 a pupil, although this can be much higher, with some state secondary school uniforms costing more than £500, making the idea of a free education “far from reality”, according to the Children’s Commission on Poverty inquiry. More than 95% of parents on low incomes reported difficulties meeting school-related costs, while large numbers of poorer children said they fell behind academically and were subjected to humiliation, embarrassment and bullying because their poverty made them “stand out” in the classroom. The report of the inquiry, supported by the Children’s Society and led by a panel of 16 children, said teachers and schools often did not comprehend the psychological impact of poverty on pupils.
Sutton Trust - What makes great teaching? Summary This report reviews over 200 pieces of research to identify the elements of teaching with the strongest evidence of improving attainment. It finds some common practices can be harmful to learning and have no grounding in research.
