The Amazing Race: English Edition – The Canswedian English Teacher
I teach a class where the students don’t receive a grade… It is for students who don’t take Spanish, French or German and have extra English/Swedish instead. At times I am left banging my head against the wall – or grumbling a few choice words – because the class lacks the structure and drive I so crave in my regular English classes. My co-teacher and I work fantastic together, and have tried to do what we can with them. However, I am constantly asking myself – how am I supposed to encourage the students and make them realize that they should give a hooey about these oh-so-important-lessons?!

Note : All Viralelt posts share the same structure. Teacher’s notes appear only on How to use Viralelt. This is done to keep “teacher text” to a minimum and avoid repetition. Before showing your students the video, tell them they are going to watch an expert being interviewed on a television news programme. Get the full story from the BBC here.
Very Short Stories For High School & Middle School
Howard is an avid short story reader who likes to help others find and understand stories. If your students are struggling to get into the short story, or you're pressed for time, here are some very brief stories to get you started. They're not as short as Hemingway's famous six-word story (For sale: baby shoes, never worn.), but they're manageable even for reluctant readers. Most are under 2,000 words; I've included an approximate word count where I could. If you want to be able to reference a print edition at your leisure, one of my favorites is "Little Worlds" (Amazon).

Flash Fiction meets Banksy
A flash fiction text is only 150 words short/long. Some say it is 75 words long and others say 1500, but we will write 150 words. In this text you remove all extra words like adjectives, adverbs, names, personifications and metaphors. That means that you as a writer leaves the reader to read outside the text and to create his or her own images of the characters and setting in the text.
Rebecca -novel reading (Learn English Through Story)
A novel by British female writer Daphne Du Maurier published in 1938, a best-seller and a masterpiece of gothic literature. Since its publication it has been a great success and many people remember its first line: Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again. Alfred Hitchcock filmed a cinema version of the novel (you can watch it here: Rebecca movie version).
