Beyond Drawing: Creative Colored Pencil Art & Sculpture From a very first look at these wonderfully detailed colored pencil sculptures by Jennifer Maestre, it should come as no surprise that her artwork was initially inspired by spiny sea urchins – beautiful be dangerous to the touch. For each sculpture, Jennifer hacks apart hundreds of colored pencils, cores them perpendicular to their length and turns them into beads, essentially, which she then meticulously stitches back together and slowly shapes into solid sculptures. Though her beginnings were with creatures of the water, Jennifer quickly expanded her subject matter to cover other organic objects – from plants and flowers to house pets and more abstract animals. While some of her work has a planned form from the very beginning, other pieces morph and shift as they take shape into something completely unplanned but nonetheless compelling.

Street Art Utopia’s Best of 2011 I couldn’t help but direct everyone to fellow public art loving blog Street Art Utopia as they have compiled a pretty decent list of the best street art of 2011. If you are just getting into the wonderful world of pasting, spraying or making the streets a more creative place, this list is a great place to start (short of Wall and Piece). One of the best things about this genre is it’s diversity – you can decided what you find gimmicky/twee or meaningful and awe-inspiring.
Broken CDs Transformed Into Iridescent Animal Sculptures With most of our music now in a digital format, neatly contained on our mobile phones and iPods, many of us have no doubt got lots of old CDs stacked up in garages, waiting to become miniature frisbees or coffee coasters or museum relics from a bygone era. But rather than letting them lie there in their boxes, unloved and gathering dust, why not put them to good use by smashing them up and turning them into attractive animal sculptures? Artist Sean Avery has done exactly that and created a series of sculptures—from bears to peregrine falcons and even the Loch Ness monster—using the reflective splinters of what was once, possibly, a cherished music collection. It’s not the first time we’ve seen artworks created from dead (well, dead-ish) media.

And though Border's overly punny captions fall flat for me, the images themselves exude enough delight to make it all a treat.
