Scenic Byways of the United States There are wonderful drives all across America including National Scenic Byways, Back Country Byways, and State Scenic Byways. A National Scenic Byway is recognized by the United States Department of Transportation for one of the six "intrinsic qualities": archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational, and/or scenic. The most scenic byways are designated All-American Roads, which must meet two out of the six intrinsic qualities. Currently, there are 120 National Scenic Byways and 31 All-American Roads. In addition to these there are hundreds more designated by individual states, as well as scenic drives and back-country byways designated by the Bureau of Land Management.
