Drawing Linear Celtic Knots. I've attempted on more than one occasion to explain how I go about drawing Celtic knots, but finding it quite impossible to describe with words alone, I finally decided to put together this small tutorial with visual aid.
Most tutorials on drawing knots will emphasize use of a precise grid, but personally I don't feel that's always necessary. I start out by lightly sketching some guidelines for myself--as seen in the image above marked in red. I first divide my space into equal segments with vertical lines. Then I choose a basic shape for the knot segments and draw those in lightly as well. Here I'm using an oval shape, but any repeating shape (such as circles or rectangles), or repeating patterns of shapes (oval, rectangle, oval, rectangle, etc.) can be used. Flower tattoos are for the most part a development of the past few decades, and testimony to the fact that it is now acceptable for a woman to get tattoos ( it wasn't always like this).
A floral tattoo is often a good first tattoo for a woman who wants something fairly subtle. Divide this head like this:The top of the skull. The pupils are in the middle of the head, top to bottom. The bottom of the nose is about 1.5 eye widths from the eye line.1 eye width below the nose is between the lips.1/3 below between the lips and the chin is the chin crease.I started with an oval that fit on my skull's front view. My horizontal center line of the skull dividing the top to bottom is between the pupils. My head is 5 eyes wide not including my ears. When drawing the head I consider the horizontal eye line the center of the head.
I believe the ear gets longer with age. The head sideways is one head-length high and one head-length wide. The ear hole is in line with bottom of the nose, and the backbone/skull pivot point. The bottom of the ear varies with the individual and age. How to Practice Gesture Drawing: 7 steps.
