Russ was in the eye of the hurricane during Motown's most creative and inventive period ... and today we delve a little bit deeper into this era. Hello again everyone! In Part Two of the story of Russ Terrana's earliest days as an enigmatic engineer, some of the more interesting events and recording sessions that occurred in the months prior to the purchase of GOLDEN WORLD STUDIO by Berry Gordy were told. Around the end of September, 1966, after months of rumors and a surprise, low-key visit to the studio by Berry Gordy about a month earlier, the announcement was made, and the takeover of Golden World by Motown was complete. During the 1970’s, a new genre of music called funk was making its way into the American mainstream and Dayton, Ohio was at the epicenter.
Community Voices Producer Basim Blunt says that more funk bands came from Dayton, than any other place in the world. This story is about the world famous funk bands that hailed from the city’s West Side, and one community’s attempt to honor their legacy before the music fades. “I used to watch the Ohio Players practice when I was a kid in a garage,” says Daytonian Harold Remblert, Jr. “I’m a funketeer; I’ll be a funketeer for life. ‘Cause it was part of me and I’m a part of that era… I love funk.” Remblert is a true funketeer. Fast forward 30 years and I find myself with a wife, house and kids and living where else?
The Ohio Players were the first band to set it off in a big way. The Players were on fire, they followed up “Skin Tight” with a streak of four #1 hits, two Grammy nominations and a European tour. But Memphis was as far away as the north pole in my mind. The history that we were given about it was done in light pencil that hopscotched its way to a semi-solid landing with Elvis Presley on The Ed Sullivan Show. Sun Records considered itself the fuse that lit the 1950s with Elvis and rock'n'roll. With Carla and Rufus Thomas and Otis Redding, Stax Records brought blues to the hit parade with hooks and horns and a solid beat, evolving into Al Green and Willie Mitchell. Memphis meant music. And unless you stop to think for a minute, you might forget that it was in Memphis that Dr Martin Luther King, Jr was shot and killed on a motel balcony on 4 April 1968. The campaign began in earnest on Halloween of 1980 in Houston, Texas, with Stevie's national tour supporting a new LP called Hotter than July, featuring the song Happy Birthday, which advocated a holiday for King.

Muddy Waters "Blues And Trouble" (1969) Betty Davis Interview on The Sound of Young America Podcast. Betty Davis is a legend of soul and funk music.
The one-time wife of Miles Davis introduced the jazzman to Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone and the broad world of electric music, leading him to create "Bitches Brew. " She recorded three albums of her own in the 1970s, full of raw, sexy, outrageous funk. The first two, "Betty Davis" and "They Say I'm Different" have been re-released by the Seattle label Light in the Attic Records. Davis left the music industry in the late 1970s, and has been completely absent from the public eye since -- at one point, a fan had to track her down in the suburbs of Pittsburgh to get her $40,000 in songwriting royalties. Original Recordings 1970 77. Where Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys left off is exactly the spot where Kool and Together was born.
For the Sanders brothers, the screams of Psychedelic Rock met with Motown’s funky Soul at a crossroads called Black Rock—a mixture of two genres that few were bold enough to attempt and even fewer possessed the technical ability to master. At the same time groups like Black Merda were crafting their take on Black Rock in Detroit, Kool and Together were blazing their own path with distortion pedals and lyrics about social turmoil in the most unlikely of places, a small, dusty town in South Texas. THE SCENE: The downtown scene of New York City circa 1982 was the nexus of punk, jazz and dance music yet few artists attempted to compile all three styles into one mega-style, citing reasons such as “technically impossible” and “virtually unlistenable”. Enter trombonist Joseph Bowie, who developed the Voltron-like powers to merge these genres into one sound with his group Defunkt, who released their debut album the same year. A hit with musicians and a miss with everybody else they returned in 1984 with a tighter yet schizoid follow-up, the pummeling Thermonuclear Sweat. I never ever travel without some music to listen to, but then I had never planned to be leaving a huge music festival a day early and taking a bus home by myself. I am not the praying type, but only about 12 hours before I had muttered an oration to St. George asking for strength, protection, and courage to say some things that don't come naturally to me. My musical ruminations were interrupted by long conversations with near strangers. After the bus ride I had lunch with the less than total stranger and then went to get my car. Ohio Soul Recordings. You know why Gil never had much love for that ill-conceived Godfather of Rap tag. If you're already your own genre, you don't need the weak currency offered by another. If you're a one-off, why would you want to bask in the reflected glory of knock-offs? If you're already Odin, being proclaimed the decrepit sire of Thor and Loki just ain't gonna rock your world. Gil knew he wasn't bigger than hip-hop—he knew he was just better.
Like Jimi was better than heavy metal, Coltrane better than bebop, Malcolm better than the Nation of Islam, Marley better than the King James Bible. He was also better in the sense that any major brujo who can stand alone always impresses more than those who need an army in front of them to look bad, jump bad, and mostly have other people to do the killing.
