COVID-19 vaccines: What does 95% efficacy actually mean?
You have likely heard that Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine efficacy is 95%, Moderna's is 94% and Johnson & Johnson's is 66%.
But what do these numbers actually mean? It's not just an academic question. How people understand these numbers affects how they think about the vaccine, whether they get it and how they behave after getting it, all of which have implications for the pandemic on a larger scale. Highly infectious COVID-19 strain found in Alberta. CALGARY -- A different strain of the COVID-19 virus that originated in South Africa has been found in Alberta, the province's top doctor said Friday.
Dr. Deena Hinshaw made the announcement on social media, saying the case had been found in a person who had recently travelled. So far, it's believed to be the only case of its kind in Canada and she says the patient is isolating themselves from others. Later Friday evening, the Public Health Agency of Canada confirmed that the Alberta case was the first confirmed case of the variant in all of Canada. "The individual is in quarantine and there's no evidence at this time that the virus has spread to others," she said. Nevertheless, she says the presence of the case in Alberta is a concern to health officials. Coronavirus COVID-19 Infographic. See how a sneeze can launch germs much farther than 6 feet. UK Covid variant extremely unlikely to evade vaccines, scientists say. The new coronavirus variant that is sweeping the UK is extremely unlikely to evade immune responses generated by vaccines or a previous Covid infection, scientists say. Researchers in the US found that antibodies collected from former patients very rarely targeted parts of the virus that were mutated in the new variant. Their work suggests only 0.5% of individuals are at risk of having reduced protection against the variant, named B.1.1.7. The findings will come as a relief to scientists and public health officials who have been concerned that vaccines being rolled out worldwide might be less effective against the new variant, and that cases could soar on the back of reinfections.
Based on the new analysis, Akiko Iwasaki, a professor of immunobiology at Yale University, said: “The B.1.1.7 variant is unlikely to escape recognition by antibodies generated by prior infection with [older versions of the] virus or the vaccines.”
