2006 Blackwater en action àBaghdad. Branding Inside the Military-Industrial Complex. Advertising from the 1950’s through the end of the century (and still somewhat to this day) has followed a fairly standard formula: Brands bought ads to sell more stuff, so they could buy more ads to sell more stuff, so they could buy more ads and… so on.
Clients bought eyeballs (two eyeballs equals one “impression”) to drive sales, and when sales went up they simply bought more impressions. Funny thing is, if sales went down the agency solution was usually to buy more impressions too. To this day this is how the Super Bowl still sells commercials, based on the promise of delivering over one hundred million impressions (111 million in 2012). This symbiotic relationship between brands and advertising built mega brands like Procter & Gamble and mega agencies like Young & Rubicam, and has been oft referred to as the “advertising-industrial complex”.
