Sarah Small
ARTIST STATEMENT: The Delirium Constructions (as a titled photographic series) was born in 2003, though its thematic content has figured in Small’s work since she began photographing at thirteen. Up-close examinations of emotional authenticity resonate throughout Small’s images as a teenager, in her life-long diaristic Polaroid-of-the-Day project, and through her past and current endeavors in fine art, fashion, advertising, and editorial photography. Throughout two decades, Small has developed a unique process for directing photography, involving high-energy interaction and the encouragement of unmediated playfulness and emotional reveal.

The Cassini Probe sent us this mesmerizing and very rare picture of the planet Saturn backlit by the sun. Light diffuses through the rings and dust clouds that orbit the giant ringed planet showing us that it's ringed beauty is only a fraction of what the planet really has to offer. While the beauty of this picture is a sight to behold in of itself, the true uniqueness of this image only shows itself on closer inspection. You see that pale blue dot visible through the rings? To paraphrase Carl Sagan: Everyone you've ever known, every belief you have, every nation at war, every point of view you've ever experienced, every hope, every dream, every good, and every evil resides on that small ordinary mote.

Some people (such as myself) can barely make a pile of sand and put a paper flag on top without it falling to the ground into a somewhat less attractive pile of sand. That is why this collection of images taken at professional sand sculpting contests are so amazing to me. I hope you like them as well.
