Char Siu Bao (Pork Buns)

Char Siu Bao (Pork Buns)
20th May 2012By KatePhotography by Adam When I was living in Japan I used to buy these buns from the seven eleven below my apartment. In true Japanese style in addition to the traditional Chinese fillings they came in all sorts of kooky flavours like pizza, cheese & curry and chicken and mayonnaise. Along with a can of hot coffee they were a most reliable cure after a night out clubbing in Ropponggi. On a more recent trip to Sydney, my two year old daughter took great delight in watching highly skilled chefs throw hand stretched noodles around the kitchen and produce baskets of gorgeously delicious steamed buns formed intricately into the shape of little pink pigs! “These buns are deliciously light and fluffy and can be filled with just about anything. “We purchased the BBQ pork (char siu) from an Asian take-out place, which made the filling really quick and easy to make. Cruft: Lasagna Cupcakes When Intelligentsia Coffee opened in Pasadena recently, I was intrigued the lasagna cupcakes they served. The cupcakes are made by Heirloom LA, a catering business. About the size of a muffin, a single lasagna cupcake was a delicious meal. After seeing how much my daughter enjoyed them (she ate my entire cupcake and I had to order a second one), I decided I had to try making them at home. After a bit of research, here is my method. The ingredients are fairly simple. Spray or wipe the cupcake tin with olive oil for prevent sticking and add a little flavor. Once you filled in the first layer, gently press another wrapper in, forming another cup. Once you've placed the second wrapper, repeat the filling as you see fit. A bit of Mozzarella cheese on top of it all. I baked them for 20 minutes at 375° F and then come out perfectly browned. If you remembered to use olive oil, they should slide out easily with top crispy and the wrapper moist and tender. The small cupcake size works well for us.

Prosciutto-Wrapped Jalapeno Poppers Another day, another football viewing snack recipe. And guys? These are the bomb. Sorry to get all ’90s on you, but it’s true. But anyway. So of course I immediately revised the menu for dinner, raided Dan’s pepper plants, and made me some prosciutto-wrapped jalapeno poppers, pronto. Proscuitto-Wrapped Jalapeno Poppers Ingredients: 4 jalapenos, sliced in half lengthwise, seeds removed4 oz cream cheese, softened4 strips prosciutto, sliced in half lengthwise Directions: Preheat oven to 375.

Garlicky Baked Fries I’m never going to make garlic potato fries any other way. These garlic fries, win hands down as the best garlic french fries I’ve ever made. Plus they are baked – so I won’t feel too guilty if I make it every time I’m craving for some potato comfort. When I read that there is garlic infused oil involved, my heart skipped a beat (in a good way, not the way oil would otherwise treat your heart). crispy golden baked fries These garlic fries are incredibly simple to make and are so full of flavour. crunchy potato skin Garlic Fries Adapted from: Lottie + Doof Ingredients: 8 garlic cloves, minced or grated 6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 3 russet potatoes (about 8oz each), each cut into 12 wedges 3 tbsp cornstarch/cornflour 1 1/2 tsp coarse sea salt 1 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper ½ tsp garlic powder 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper Tools:Microplane to grating the garlic warm and soft interior Tagged as: garlic, garlic baked fries, savory bakes, sides

Broccoli Parmesan Fritters Last week, it was pointed out to me that among the 750 recipes in the archives, there is but a single recipe that utilizes broccoli. Just one! (It’s a great one, though.) For comparison, there are 11 recipes that use cauliflower and 26 with mushrooms. What terrible oversight could have led to this? Please understand: this is not one of those stories about how preciously advanced my toddler’s tastes are, how early he took an interest in foie gras and how he turns his nose up at white flour pastas, preferring farro. I have a theory that you can tuck almost any finely chopped or shredded vegetable — be it potatoes, zucchini, or an Indian-spiced mix — into a savory pancake, fry it in small mounds until crisp on both sides, serve it with a dollop of a sour cream or yogurt sauce and they will be inhaled. So, you know where this is going. And with that, I had them for lunch instead. Broccoli Parmesan Fritters There’s a lot of broccoli and very little pancake in this fritter.

How to make Edible Spoons! A few years ago I did a post on how to make edible spoons and bowls from dough. I thought it was a great idea, but just not with my method and recipe. I searched online to see if anyone else had done something similar and stumbled across a small handful of ideas, but then found this little gem… Roy, the inventor of the Edible Spoon Making Kit has indeed thought of a really simple and clever way to make edible spoons. Roy kindly sent me a kit to try (and will be giving one lucky reader a free kit!). Since receiving the kit, I’ve made well over 100 spoons (maybe 200 by now) and have enjoyed sitting around a spread of dips and toppings munching away on the spoons. To make the spoons, simply roll flat a piece of bread, punch out the spoon shape, press the cutout into the spoon and bake (more detailed instructions supplied with the kit). While I was making a batch of spoons and some home made pasta, a time saving idea popped into my head. Share 6K+ Kimanh Hi my name's Kimanh.

Death By Oreo Cupcakes They are probably the best Oreo cakes I have ever tried. A lot of cake's that I have experimented with before are like a vanilla cake with bits of Oreo in them, which didn't really give them enough Oreo flavor. But these were a lot better. I used a dark chocolate fudge cake mix instead of just a regular chocolate cake mix, which went really well with the cookies and gave the cakes just a little more flavor. So, in this recipe there is Oreo's in the cake, in the frosting, and at the bottom is a Oreo surprise. That's right, you put a whole Oreo at the bottom of the cake. Ingredients 1 package Oreo Cookies, regular size 1 package Mini Oreo Cookies, for decoration (optional) 1 package chocolate cake mix (mix according to directions on box) 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature 1/2 cup butter (1 stick), room temperature 3 3/4 cups powdered sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract cupcake liners Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream together butter and cream cheese. foodsnots.com

Brownie Rollout Cookies Two weeks ago, Alex and I took advantage of the then-awesome weather and went out for dinner at a place with outdoor seating. One cocktail led to another and then Alex put his hand on my knee! No, just kidding. The two tiniest, most precious ice cream sandwiches arrived a few minutes later and, you know, the ice cream, it was pretty good. You see, we made chocolate cookies exactly like that for Hanukah each year growing up. I know what you’re thinking: chocolate roll-out cookies? They will not disappoint. I should also tell you that because of their shatter-free bite, they also make excellent lids and bases for ice cream sandwiches. One year ago: Chicken Empanadas with Chorizo and Olives Brownie Roll-Out Cookies* Recipe from Deb’s mom Preheat oven at 350 degrees. Roll out cookie dough on floured counter. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. * According to my mother’s recipe, they’re called chocolate sugar cookies but I do not feel that it does them justice.

Buffalo Chicken Nachos Buffalo Chicken Nachos Cheesy nachos combined with spicy shredded buffalo chicken create the ultimate snack food. I’m quite possibly the last person on the face of the planet who hasn’t watched a single minute of Downton Abbey, until today. And yes, I realize that clearly has absolutely nothing to do with the recipe screaming at you. So in less than a few weeks time when you’re putting together snacks to enjoy during the big game, remember this.
