UK Third Sector Trends Study Northern Rock Foundation’s Third Sector Trends Study is a ground-breaking research programme on the scale, dynamics and needs of the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector in North East England and Cumbria. The Study is for the first time providing robust, comprehensive and freely available local and regional evidence to describe the sector. The Study will help sector organisations, infrastructure agencies, funders and government bodies who all need better information about the characteristics and activities of the third sector groups. Better data will help to improve funding negotiations, policy development and service planning.
Become Data Literate in 3 Simple Steps Become Data Literate in 3 Simple Steps Just as literacy refers to “the ability to read for knowledge, write coherently and think critically about printed material” data-literacy is the ability to consume for knowledge, produce coherently and think critically about data. Data literacy includes statistical literacy but also understanding how to work with large data sets, how they were produced, how to connect various data sets and how to interpret them. Poynter’s News University offers classes of Math for journalists, in which reporters get help with concepts such as percentage changes and averages. Interestingly enough, these concepts are being taught simultaneously near Poynter’s offices, in Floridian schools, to fifth grade pupils (age 10-11), as the curriculum attests. That journalists need help in math topics normally covered before high school shows how far newsrooms are from being data literate.

Robot scientist becomes first machine to discover new scientific knowledge-Namoroka Thursday, April 2, 2009 Scientists funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) have created a Robot Scientist which the researchers believe is the first machine to have independently discovered new scientific knowledge. The robot, called Adam, is a computer system that fully automates the scientific process. The work will be published tomorrow (03 April 2009) in the journal Science. Prof Ross King, who led the research at Aberystwyth University, said: "Ultimately we hope to have teams of human and robot scientists working together in laboratories". The scientists at Aberystwyth University and the University of Cambridge designed Adam to carry out each stage of the scientific process automatically without the need for further human intervention.
UN Statistics New York, 1 June 2016 - The chair of the Statistical Commission, Ms. Wasmalia Bivar of Brazil, addressed the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on 1 June during its Coordination and Management Meeting. Ms. Bivar, who provided her briefing by videolink, informed the Council that the Statistical Commission at its last session in March had agreed “as a practical starting point” on a global indicator framework, which had been developed by the Inter-agency and Expert Group on Sustainable Development Goal Indicators (IAEG-SDGs). General Social Survey The GSS contains a standard 'core' of demographic, behavioral, and attitudinal questions, plus topics of special interest. Many of the core questions have remained unchanged since 1972 to facilitate time-trend studies as well as replication of earlier findings. The GSS takes the pulse of America, and is a unique and valuable resource. It has tracked the opinions of Americans over the last four decades. Trends The GSS is widely regarded as the single best source of data on societal trends.
