The Cuban National Ballet by Peter Hapak- danse It’s the day before the premiere of Swan Lake on May 12 at Havana’s Grand Theater, and backstage, the dancers of the Cuban National Ballet (BNC) corps are vibrating with nervous energy. The final rehearsals are a prologue to more than just a local premiere: in June, the company will perform Tchaikovsky’s ballet and other classics in the U.S.—its first tour of America in eight years and the first time many of these young dancers will set foot on American soil. While Cuban-American diplomatic relations show few signs of thawing, visa exchanges for artists, writers and performers traveling between the U.S. and Cuba have increased, following tight restrictions during the Bush Administration. In Havana, the legendary ballerina and BNC director general Alicia Alonso has settled in to watch the last rehearsals. Dance is one of the greatest source’s of inspiration for TIME contract photographer Peter Hapak, who studied the work of legendary art director and photographer Alexey Brodovitch.
Goldstein, Dina Core Tenets | Worldview Explorations The Worldview Explorations curriculum is based on a developmental model designed as a result of research on consciousness and transformation. The following are a set of principles upon which the content of this curriculum was designed: Each of Us Conveys a Unique Worldview Our unique worldview is influenced by our life experiences, culture, religion, Socio-economic status, gender, biology, environment, family, and friends among other things. We each see and sense the world differently based upon our personal beliefs, perspectives and worldview. Worldviews Inform and Affect Our Reality Worldviews not only impact how we understand and make sense of the world around us but also influence how we express ourselves in the world. There is Value in Paradox and Uncertainty Our Consciousness Matters Consciousness (awareness of one's own existence, sensations, thoughts, surroundings, etc.) mediates the relationship between inner experience and the outer environment. There are Multiple Ways of Knowing
A Land for Dreamers An image that went viral on the web is “Go Your Own Road” by Erik Johansson. Since 2009, this Swedish artist has become internationally acclaimed with a large following on Facebook, commissioned by companies like Adobe, Microsoft and Google, and invited to speak at TEDSalon in London. Johansson is more inspired by painters like Dali and Magritte, and of course graphic illusionist Escher, than actual photographers. Because his interest is making the picture, not just capturing it. Johansson carefully plans each concept, which can take months as he selects locations to photograph. Photography: Hassan Hajjaj's photographs of the biker girl gangs of Marrakech Hassan Hajjaj: Kesh Angels These vibrant portraits by Hassan Hajjaj are taken from his ongoing Kesh Angels project in which Moroccan ladies dressed in veils and djellabah pose confidently on motorcycles, dripping in gaudy designer labels. Fusing aspects of traditional African studio photography with the glossy glamour of a high-fashion shoot, the images masterfully subvert preconceived notions of Arabic women. The frame of each image is custom-built from recognisable everyday objects, from LEGO to Arabic lettering or repeat-patterns of cans of Fanta, so that his subjects are literally surrounded by the influence of branding. Fun and independent, Hassan’s biker girls offer us an entirely unique view of how youth, commerce and tradition meet in the streets of Marrakech.
