Two of the approved courses, "Introduction to Genetics and Evolution" and "Bioelectricity: A Quantitative Approach," come from Duke University. Two others, "Pre-Calculus" and "Algebra," come from the University of California at Irvine. In 1997 he became an associated member of the graduate program ‘mathematical optimization’ at the University of Trier, where he obtained a PhD in Computer Science in 2002. From 2002–2008 worked as a postdoc at the Friedrich-Schiller-University in Jena.

I had hacked together my own design education in 6 months while working a full-time job. I didn’t think I was ready but started applying for jobs anyway – and got a job at a great startup, Exec. To be clear, I’m nowhere near as good as those design prodigies that come out of a 4-year education at an elite school like RISD. But I’m definitely good enough to do my job well. I’m the only designer at Exec, so I do a pretty wide range of things – visual and interaction design, print, web, and mobile app design.
Princeton Experience By Mitchell Duneier A few months ago, just as the campus of Princeton University had grown nearly silent after commencement, 40,000 students from 113 countries arrived here via the Internet to take a free course in introductory sociology. The noncredit Princeton offering came about through a collaboration between Coursera, a new venture in online learning, and 16 universities, including my own. When my class was announced last spring, I was both excited and nervous. Unlike computer science and other subjects in which the answers are pretty much the same around the globe, sociology can be very different depending on the country that you come from. As letters and e-mail messages began arriving in anticipation of my course, I wondered how I, an American professor, could relate my subject to people I didn't know from so many different societies.

When I started the Intro to Programming Nanodegree program, I was in the middle of a full-time internship in Marketing and Corporate Communication in Frankfurt, Germany. It was just one of many internships I completed to ultimately help me find a job that I’m really passionate about. Although the job situation in Germany is good, it usually takes some time for recent media graduates to get a foot in the door. There are just too many highly qualified applicants and too few positions available, so you have to find a way to stand out from the crowd. I always try to learn new things and expand my horizons.
Brian Eno Lists 20 Books for Rebuilding Civilization & 59 Books For Building Your Intellectual World Creative Commons image via Wikimedia Commons Artist and music producer Brian Eno wrote one of my very favorite books: A Year with Swollen Appendices, which takes the form of his personal diary of the year 1995 with essayistic chapters (the "swollen appendices") on topics like "edge culture," generative music, new ways of singing, pretension, CD-ROMs (a relevant topic back then), and payment structures for recording artists (a relevant topic again today). It also includes a fair bit of Eno's correspondence with Stewart Brand, once editor of the Whole Earth Catalog and now president of the Long Now Foundation, "a counterpoint to today's accelerating culture" meant to "help make long-term thinking more common" and "creatively foster responsibility in the framework of the next 10,000 years."
