Reactive Oxygen Species, Aging, and Antioxidative Nutraceuticals - Lee - 2006 - Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety

Oxygen is an essential component of living organisms. The generation of reactive oxygen species such as superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radicals, and singlet oxygen is inevitable in aerobic metabolism of the body. Reactive oxygen species cause lipid oxidation, protein oxidation, DNA strand break and base modification, and modulation of gene expression. In the past several years, unprecedented progress has been made in the recognition and understanding of roles of reactive oxygen species in many diseases. ‎foodgrade-hydrogenperoxide.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/MichaelMurphy.pdf. ‎www.promislowlab.org/reprints/KrausEtAl2013AmNat.pdf. E-mail jhare@mail.jhmi.edu Key Words: The syndrome of congestive heart failure (HF) is the most important cardiovascular disorder in the Western world from public health and health care resource utilization perspectives.1 Great strides have been made in treating patients with HF through the development of drugs that antagonize neurohormonal activation.2 Nevertheless, patients with HF experience clinically meaningful disease progression despite optimal current therapy. In this issue of Circulation Research, Cesselli et al9 have examined the linkage between pathways involved in mediating oxidative metabolism and apoptosis in dogs with pacing-induced dilated cardiomyopathy.

Oxidative Stress in Dog with Heart Failure: The Role of Dietary Fatty Acids and Antioxidants. The Role of Oxidative Stress in IMHA. Canine Health Foundation Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is a major cause of severe anemia in American dogs.

The Role of Oxidative Stress in IMHA

IMHA occurs when the immune system attacks and destroys oxygen-carrying red blood cells (RBC), leading to symptoms including exhaustion, weakness, and panting. However, although scientists have known for years that the immune system destroys the RBCs in dogs with IMHA, they still have no idea what prompts it to attack. That’s why, with the help of the AKC Canine Health Foundation, researchers from the University of Guelph set out to compare the antibodies found on the RBCs of dogs with IMHA to those found on the RBCs of healthy dogs and dogs with other forms of anemia. There are several mechanisms through which the immune system could target and destroy RBC. As it turns out, simply having antibodies bound to RBCs was not enough to cause IMHA.

The telling piece of information was not that the immune systems of dogs with IMHA were on the attack. Publications: AVMA - American Journal of Veterinary Research - 74(7):983 - Abstract. July 2013, Vol. 74, No. 7, Pages 983-989 David L.
